Winemaker

A particular focus for Louisa is the developmental work at Yalumba with Viognier, and the creation of ‘The Virgilius’ Viognier – Yalumba’s pre-eminent white wine. Widely regarded as a leader within the industry, Louisa receives widespread recognition for her work with the variety.

During her 20-year career at Yalumba, Louisa Rose has become one of the world’s most respected winemakers – forging an identity for Australian Viognier, challenging perceptions of Barossa Shiraz, leading her viti- and vinicultural teams to ever greater heights and giving up her nights, weekends and spare moments for the betterment of Australian wine.

Louisa Rose is one of Australia's most experienced and talented winemakers. Put simply, she’s a rock star.

Lou, our Chief Winemaker since 2006, wears many hats at Yalumba; award winner, wine judge, board member, natural leader. Lou is an inspiring figure in Australia’s wine industry and a proud ambassador for Yalumba’s own brand of progressive winemaking.

Her name is synonymous with Viognier in Australia; in 2014 The Age named Lou Australia’s Best Winemaker, in 2008 she received the coveted Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the Year award and in 2004 the International Wine & Spirit Competition named her the winner of the Women in Wine award.

Lou’s heavily involved in judging at Australian and international wine shows and is an active member of Barossa winemaking fraternity The Barons of Barossa. And, because she’s not busy enough, Lou is a Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute, the co-chair of the South Australian Wine Industry Council - an advisory group to the South Australian Government - and is a member of the South Australian Agribusiness Council.

Lou is the custodian of both Yalumba tradition and innovation at the winery. It's a big task but one she has been groomed for since her first vintage at Yalumba in 1992. Her gifts as a taster and winemaker have been on display ever since.

Practices & Techniques

When you’ve been operating in a rural environment for more than 165 years, you learn a few things about the importance of sustainability. Protecting the fundamental elements essential to the creation of quality wine, like land, air, water and energy, is paramount and something we take very seriously across the entire family business.

Yalumba has been developing its own sustainable viticulture program since the mid 1990s. This starts in the vineyard and extends to every aspect of winemaking, production, packaging and distribution. Many awards and milestones have resulted due to sustainability now being at our core. All Yalumba wines were announced vegetarian and vegan friendly as of 2011. Yalumba is the first wine company in the world to receive the Climate Protection Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency, 2007. These benefits are most obvious in your wine glass.

Yalumba’s focus on sustainability is all about respecting the natural environment around us.

“We’re convinced our efforts in protecting our natural resources reflect in the quality of wines we make,” says fifth-generation Proprietor Robert Hill-Smith. “Quite simply, if we’re to focus on excellence in winemaking, it absolutely requires excellence in environmental management – the two are inseparable."

Yalumba runs an impressive environmental management programme, setting aside hundreds of hectares of land for conservation management. For every hectare of vineyard we own, we have at least one hectare of natural vegetation. We’ve planted thousands of trees over the past few decades.

“Apart from economic viability and social equity, for us, sustainability is about biodiversity in our vineyards,” says Winemaker Louisa Rose. “To encourage it, we’ve done a number of things: we’ve reduced the amount of chemicals we use, incorporated an integrated pest management system, and encouraged biodiversity of vegetation in our vineyards”. All in the name of better winemaking.
