In 2001, eager to broaden his winery experience, David went to McLaren Vale, South Australia to work harvest for the renowned d'Arenberg Winery. After harvest he traveled extensively visiting over 100 wineries before returning to the U.S. to join the team at Sonoma's Gundlach Bundschu Winery. The following year, the opportunity to study at the University of Adelaide brought David back to Australia where he focused on expanding his understanding of viticulture by working in the vineyards of Genesis Vineyards and Leabrook Estate. He also worked alongside winemaker Martin Shaw and Master of Wine Michael Hill Smith at Shaw and Smith Wines.
In 2003, David returned to Gundlach Bundschu as the Cellar Supervisor and was later named Assistant Winemaker. In 2007 he was promoted to Associate Winemaker and named winemaker for its sister winery, Bartholomew Park. Here David refined his approach to blending and vineyard management working alongside noted vineyard manager and organic farming pioneer, Phil Coturri.
In 2008, David left his Sonoma home once again, this time to go over the mountain to Napa Valley where he accepted the role as Winemaker at Paraduxx Winery. There David combined his passion for viticulture with his love of blending and the winemaking skills he had honed over two continents to produce wines of true stature and sophistication.
Six years later, David returned to his beloved Sonoma Valley in the role of Director of Winemaking for West Coast Wine Partners, the family-owned enterprise whose winery holdings include Valley of the Moon Winery, Lake Sonoma Winery, Madrone Vineyards and PLUME Napa Valley. At West Coast David is responsible for the oversight of all winemaking, cellar and vineyard operations, and for the overall shape and direction of Madrone Vineyards Estate, Valley of the Moon’s forthcoming luxury tier of estate-driven wines.
“To be in a position to help grow and shape the future of an iconic, Sonoma Valley winery, to usher in a new era of winemaking across all of our brands, to work with and learn from true industry veterans - it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I could not be more pleased or more proud to join West Coast Wine Partners,” commented Marchesi.
A proud father of two, David spends his down time with his wife and children exploring Sonoma County and the shores and mountains of Lake Tahoe. He will be based at Valley of the Moon Winery.
Proprietor and Chief Executive Officer
Tony is third generation vintner of the Stewart family. A pioneering west coast wine family, the Stewarts have over a half-century of appreciation for the uniqueness and special qualities of farming premium vineyards and crafting fine wine. Their philosophy has been to do more with less—with a tradition of low impact viticulture practices—and vineyards solely focused on providing the winery team with ripe concentrated fruit that expresses its sense of origin.
A lover of fine wine and regional food influences, Tony believes intently that the winery experience must focus the consumer not only towards the wines but also to the pairing of these wines with local culinary delights.
Tony’s vision and guidance have been instrumental in developing another Stewart family property, Quails’ Gate, as one of Canada’s top culinary and wine destinations while producing wines that have garnered international credibility. With now three generations at play as premium Okanagan Valley grape growers, Quails’ Gate Winery is recognized as one of the region’s best winery experiences.
At Valley of the Moon, Tony and the Stewart family are deeply committed to implementing the same uncompromising commitment to producing quality wines and estate offerings.
Practices & Techniques
It starts in the vineyard with sustainable farming practices and careful grape selection from the best blocks of land throughout Sonoma County.
In the winery, from whole cluster pressing and careful separation of press fractions, to barrel fermentation and aging in small French and American oak barrels, our wines are carefully nurtured.
We employ the traditional method of cellar management which means that every wine lot is kept separate until the end of the aging period, at which time extensive blending trials are conducted.
The end result is outstanding wines that are complex, integrated, balanced and truly expressive of Sonoma. Most importantly, they are enjoyable.
Estate Vineyards / AVA
At Valley of the Moon Winery quality begins in the vineyard, with a thorough viticulture tradition that is as rich and deep as the soil in which our grapes are grown.
For generations we’ve been working with select growers in Sonoma County—some since the 1930s—who know the value of careful stewardship of the land. On our own estate we have old vine Zinfandel vineyards that date back to the 1930s, as well as more recent plantings of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, and Barbera. We employ low impact viticulture practices to preserve the diversity of our natural surroundings without compromising the quality of fruit.
At Valley of the Moon each block from every vineyard is handled separately with the attention to detail required for premium winemaking. The results are high quality grapes that reflect the unique Sonoma soils in which they are grown.
