Tondre Wines

About

You can be assured that every hand involved in the production of Tondre Wine is passionate about delivering a world class product. We have the perfect pairing of grape and winemaker… a task not so easily accomplished. Tondre Wines reflects all the wonders, blessings and history of the Santa Lucia Highland Appellation. Tondre and Joe gave their first four vintages away to family and friends, and due to overwhelming demand offered it in small quantities to the public. And now, just as then, we make it in small batches to assure quality from nose to finish. If you have the palette for fine, velvety mouthfeel wine, we’re confident you will not be disappointed. For the Alarid family, it has been a labor of love, and we’re grateful to be able to share it with you.

History

Tondre Alarid and his son Joe Tondre have a steadfast belief that with hard work and a little luck things will work out. With nearly a century of farming in the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, California between them, they know what it’s like to be in partners with Mother Nature…and they get along fine.

The great blessing is that Tondre Grapefield lies firmly in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands Appellation, fast becoming a world-class region for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Joe and family continue to live on the ranch where they nurture and raise their grapes 24/7. It is a way of life for them and their family.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Tondre Grapefield was planted in 1997 on six and half acres in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. It now has seven blocks for an accumulation of 80 acres Pinot Noir and 21 acres of Chardonnay grape vines.

Several of the leading Pinot Noir clones are planted to ensure that there is a medley of fruit and sufficient Tondre pedigree character to suit vintner stylistic preferences. These clones are pruned to hang two clusters per shoot with an average thirteen shoots per vine which yield three and a half tons per acre of ripe and distinctive Pinot Noir grapes.

Among pundits of Pinot Noir, “terroir” is most often referenced for flavor, aromas and overall grape quality from viticulture and historic influences. Vignerons have established the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation as one of the crown jewels of California viticulture for Pinot Noir grapes. This distinguished appellation has protruding southeast facing slopes, strong maritime influences from Monterey Bay and ancient glacial soils consisting of decomposed granite, gravel and sandy loam. This is the regions terroir affording grapes an extended “Hang Time”. This means more sunlight on the vine and more even ripening, with sufficient cool-down in the evening to firm up the grapes natural acidity. As a result, grapes have an intense expression of deep fruit flavors gaining complexity and nuance from deep vine penetration of the soil and extraction of its minerals.

The importance and interdependence of combining grower and vintner is omnipresent for wine quality assurance and protection of a vineyard designation vintage by vintage. Vignerons globally have known this for centuries. With this old and new world wine acumen, Tondre chose carefully a cluster of vignerons to ensure that Pinot Noir made from the Tondre Grapefields’ are among the premier wines of the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation.

Tondre Grapefield is among the founding growers of the newly formed “Wine Artisans of Santa Lucia Highlands”. This alliance of growers and vintners is dedicated to expressing, through their fine wines, the unique character of this rugged Monterey appellation.

2009 Tondre Pinot Noir
“Its medium garnet color hints at the considerable aromatic development this finely-constructed gem displays just three years after its vintage. The expected SLH dried orange peel and spiced cherry signature aromas are now carried by a symphony of seductive nougat, cinnamon, smoked sage and toffee bouquet elements. The structure is silky and warm, with a rich, oily texture that coats the mouth with exotic perfumes, stonefruit and savory spices. Carries its 14.8 alcohol seamlessly, with a long, graceful finish.”

2010 Tondre Chardonnay
“Classic rum and citrus peel aromatics typical of SLH are achieved in this cool vintage at a lower alcohol than customary, resulting in a dense, full-bodied palate with no heat or bitterness in the finish. Full ML creates a rich butterscotch impression which displays balanced acidity, creating a mouth-watering explosion of flavors which conclude with a lingering note of spiced tangerine. Excellent for chicken or grilled swordfish.”

“All the Tondre Grapefield Pinots I’ve tasted have a ripeness and intensity that’s typical of the
appellation, but they never stray from their essential Pinot-ness.”

San Francisco Chronicle
The Chronicle’s Wine Selections review Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir Two and half Stars out of Four.
“Intertwined bands of baking spice, espresso and black pepper run through this wine, adding complexity to the opulently ripe fruit (black cherry and blackberry). Silky in texture, it finishes with tangy dried cherry and firm acidity.”
