History

Buzz and Karen Buckingham’s ventures in the wine industry started when their children attended school in Walla Walla ten years ago. Convinced by a noted winemaker that they too could make wine, they gathered five other couples with similar passions and made a barrel of wine in their barn in Sammamish. One barrel soon became 22! They consulted with Cheryl Barber Jones along the way and made award winning wines under the label Rock Meadow Cellars.

After some years, they decided to venture out and started their own winery, Sol Stone. They wanted a name that symbolized the circle of life. From the warming sun to the rocky soils that nurture Washington grape vines and also demonstrate the heartiness found in nature and man to overcome adverse conditions. Combining their passions for wine and philanthropy, they use a portion of profits to support Guide Dogs for the Blind and The WAVE Foundation which benefits domestic violence organizations. Their grapes are sourced from premium vineyards throughout the state; Grenache- Weinbau; Cabernet Sauvignon- Dionysus, Malbec-Seven Hills, Tempranillo-Uplands, Viognier-Antoine Creek; and Chardonnay-Conner Lee Vineyards plus a premier Rhone blend, “Stoners Red.”

As production increased the need for a retail tasting room became more and more evident and as luck would have it, they met Leigh McMillan and Kristen Dorrity of Welcome Road Winery who also wanted to pair with another winery to share space, knowledge and a love of all things natural. The result is a tasting room that is made of natural materials from the reclaimed Douglas fir bar to the Oak barrel tables and attended with a rock fireplace and Madrone mantel. Visitors will find a place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine and small plates along with the wine makers who will be happy to share the details of how each of their wines were created and snuggle with the two retired guide dogs, Radley and Francisco.
