Slanted House Wines

About

Welcome to Slanted House Wines. We are a family owned winery established in 2005. We specialize in handcrafted, single-vineyard wines that express the specific characteristics of the vineyard in which the fruit was grown. In the winery, the fruit is simply guided through small lot fermentations. The ultimate goal is to make a varietally correct wine that can be bottled unfined and unfiltered. We hope that the wines we make are true to the vineyards that gave birth to them and that they will be enjoyed with good food and good company.

Winemaker

Thomas - Winemaker/Founder:

I attended UC Davis, where I received a degree in Enology and Viticulture in 2002. Since receiving my degree, I have worked with many talented winemakers that have shaped my understanding of the craft of making wine. In 2003, I interned at Testarossa under Winemaker Ed Kurtzman where I learned that sometimes the best thing to do is to do nothing at all. I then worked as assistant winegrower to Winemaker Michael Michaud where the vineyard was always the focus. From 2005 to 2007 I worked at Owl Ridge Services, a Custom Crush facility with an epic list of winemakers including: Greg La Follette of La Follette wines, Anthony Austin of Austin Cellars and Scott Rich of Talisman. From 2007 to 2009 I worked at Showket Vineyards in Napa as co-winemaker with Russell Bevan. Currently, in addition to the Slanted House label, I am assistant winemaker to James MacPhail of MacPhail Wines and Catherine Blagden of Blagden Wines.

History

In 2005, my wife Alicia and I followed our wine making dream and launched our Slanted House wine label. The name was inspired by our home in Petaluma, CA which has a slightly uneven foundation.

The Team

Alicia:

Alicia is the director of sales for Slanted House Wines. She is also the vineyard and winery assistant, working side-by-side with me in leafing, cluster-thinning, punching down and, of critical importance, in the tasting process.

Practices & Techniques

The fruit is simply guided through small lot fermentations. The ultimate goal is to make a varietally correct wine that can be bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

We made 120 cases from the one-acre Moresco Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, planted to Syrah. In 2006 and 2007 we made wine from this same vineyard, and also made an additional Syrah from the DryStack Vineyard in Bennett Valley.
