History

Paul and Jill Buttery, the founders of the modern Sacredtree Estate, continued their family’s wine making tradition and are committed to create and develop their brand image. In the early days, they took a chance and put all their hard earned money, with some help from the bank, into buying one of the oldest vineyards on Tatachilla Road, in the heart of the McLaren Vale Wine Region.

After a few years, the Buttery’s bought another vineyard with land on the eastern side of the region in the foothills near McLaren Flat and called it Sacredtree. They set about gradually planting the rest of the land.

While their daughter Melissa had already completed an Associate Diploma in Business, it was in 1994 where Melissa decided that she too would make a career out of grape growing. Melissa is now a qualified viticulturist and manages the Sacredtree Vineyards, Sacredtree are now one of the largest private growers in Mclaren Vale.

In 1997, Andrew returned from Melbourne to manage The Terraces and help the family to manage the Sacredtree brand.

Mike Brown soon entered the picture as not only a winemaker, but Melissa’s future husband. Having gained valuable experience at d’Arenberg wines, the Buttery family invited Mike to be their chief winemaker.

Today Sacredtree Estate grows varieties such as Shiraz, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, Savagnin and Verdelho.

Since 1998 Sacredtree has been developing the 10 ha Sacredtree Wetlands. Having created six dams and planted in excess of 50,000 native trees, they are now working in partnership with Greening Australia creating an area of biodiversity which is a major haven for native plants, frogs, birds and other animals, as well as being a great teaching resource for the community. Their ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability has led to the Sacredtree Estate being farmed biodynamically. These practices have flowed into the winery and we are now seeing the first 100% biodynamic Sacredtree wines being released onto the market.

Practices & Techniques

Mike Brown’s winemaking philosophy is straightforward working in tandem with the viticulturist is paramount to the final quality of the fruit

Choices made in the vineyard from pruning through to harvesting will determine the ultimate characteristic of the wine. Mike believes in minimal intervention across all stages of the winemaking process which results in wines which are powerful, concentrated, and express the true characteristics of each variety and the region.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Sacredtree Estate has two vineyards. Tatachilla Road Vineyard behind the township of McLaren Vale and the Sacredtree Vineyard in the foothills near McLaren Flat.

Tatachilla Road Vineyard:

Paul and Jill Buttery purchased their first vineyard on Tatachilla Road; a beautiful vineyard comprising Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz with a limited supply of mains water.

In 1983 they sunk a bore which helped improve the vineyard. In 1987 and 1989, Paul and Jill bought adjoining parcels of land which were planted with Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Over the years some of the original vineyard was grafted to Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Sauvignon Blanc has since been converted back to Shiraz and in 2008 the Chardonnay was removed and replaced with three different clones of Shiraz. 2005 and 2006 saw some Cabernet Sauvignon grafted over to Savagnin.

In 2011, we commenced grafting Semillon to Cabernet Sauvignon and extensive reworking of our Old Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vines is continuing.

Sacredtree Vineyard:

Sacredtree Vineyard is the home block of the Buttery family which is located in the foothills near McLaren Flat. It reconfirmed family’s grape growing and wine making history. Paul and Jill committed to the further acquisitions of vineyards and kept their eyes on the the consistency of the wine quality.

Today Sacredtree Vineyards in McLaren Flat is planted with Chardonnay, Verdelho, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese.
