Trained at The Center for Enology and Viticulture in Walla Walla, Washington, Kelly is a seasoned, sought after, and totally nerdy-hip winemaker with an unquenchable passion for Oregon white wines. Yep. That’s right. White wines.
Kelly has worked with over a dozen professional Northwest winemakers, lending her skills and experience as a winemaker, oenologist, consultant, and expert taster. Eternally curious, Kelly has gravitated toward lesser known grape varietals. Wildly audacious, Kelly has explored more natural winemaking processes.
“The white varietals of Oregon are so shockingly interesting. When I began experimenting with their potential through native winemaking methods, I knew I had found my home. Oregon soil, like few other places in the world, provides everything a grape needs to both ripen perfectly and finish it’s own native ferment. Wild yeast grows right on the grapes and infuses the wine with it’s own natural terroir. Sure, they are rowdier than commercial yeasts and require constant supervision and behavior management, but the flavors are so delightfully complex! I really never was one to take the easy road.”
After drinking tons of cheap Côtes du Rhône in the ’90’s, Stephen Upchurch was convinced he knew everything about wine. His fantasy was shattered when he arrived in the Willamette Valley in 2007. Many tastings, vineyard visits and wine dinners later and he is still mortified by his past but finds redemption in the possibility of putting gorgeous wine on your dinner table. As his palate found a fondness for whites he found a friend in Kelly and their winemaking began in 2013.
