Estate Vineyards / AVA
Ros Ritchie Wines secures high quality white and red varieties from several growers of a like mindset in the region, who produce fruit from low cropping vines, with smaller, more open canopies and minimal requirement for water, to produce well balanced fruit with optimum flavor and ripeness.
Ros inherited Dead Man's Hill Vineyard in 2009. 500 metres above sea level, this vineyard is planted solely to Gewürztraminer.
Ruth and Jim Baxendale’s vineyard is planted on the top of the hills, south of Whitfield, above the King River valley.
Since 2009, the cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc has been grown entirely without irrigation, producing lower crops with increased intensity of flavour, which shows through in both the wines made from their fruit.
Judy and Roger Cowan’s Mt Samaria vineyard – a north-westerly slope near Lima South in the Broken River valley, 20 minutes north of Mansfield – provides both the shiraz and tempranillo fruit which are harvested at optimum flavour and ripeness.
The wines made are rich with mature fruit flavours and fine tannins.
Dead Man Hill:
In February 2009, Ros Ritchie inherited the highly regarded Dead Man’s Hill vineyard, originally included in the vineyards providing Delatite Winery with gewürztraminer grapes. Planted wholly to gewürztraminer by Robert Ritchie (Ros’ father) in 1975, the vineyard has deep soils and the vines now grow without supplementary water, producing small canopies with small-berried, intensely aromatic fruit.
Malcolm and Susan Kinloch on Waiere Rd, Booroolite have from the beginning concentrated on producing the classic champagne varieties - chardonnay, pinot meunier and pinot noir.
A portion of all three are picked to produce delicious, full flavoured, yet elegant base wines in our winery, which are then bottle fermented and disgorged at Cofield's winery.
The Timbertop vineyard, owned and run by Geelong Grammar School, is the source of our nebbiolo, being our first release from this vineyard.
Planted on a high, north facing slope east of Mansfield, in the lee of Mount Buller and Mt Timbertop, the fruit ripens slowly and is usually harvested very late, in May.
The low cropping fruit grown here has very firm structure, fine acidity and savoury, earthy, spice characters.
