Red Rooster Winery

Red Rooster Winery

About

There’s no finer place to be greeted with a glass of great wine. Located on picturesque Naramata Bench Road in Penticton, BC, Red Rooster Winery offers a wine experience that’s a short detour from the expected. For starters, you’ll notice art throughout the winery. And it’s not the kind you’d typically expect to see. The best example of this is Frank the Baggage Handler. A local celebrity, this large statue of a naked guy graces our lawn. You’ll also find friendly, knowledgeable, clothed staff who will offer you a tasting of Karen's wonderful award winning wines. Whether you’re an adventurous tourist in BC, or a wine-loving local, you’ll enjoy the ultimate Okanagan wine country experience at Red Rooster.

Location Description

Perched high above Okanagan Lake, our winery is located among the rolling hills of Naramata Bench Road. Here we have the most inspiring views you could possibly imagine. Which is probably why we tend to look at things a little differently.

Winemaker

KAREN GILLIS:

As a child, Karen dreamed of becoming a chef. It wasn’t until she had accumulated a wealth of food science education and experience that she stumbled onto her true calling—winemaking. As approachable and engaging as the wine she crafts, Karen has been with us since 2007. She believes quality winemaking requires a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves method. While Red Rooster is already known for making great VQA wines, Karen’s vision is to become the benchmark for quality in the Okanagan.

History

Red Rooster Winery was founded in 1990 by a European couple who settled in the area. Our first vintage was released in 1997. It was not long before our winery became known for producing award-winning wines that express the very best of BC and the Okanagan. Despite our quirks, this is the part that we take very seriously. Click here to learn about our winemaking style.

We also became known for a certain style of hospitality that wasn’t quite like the other wineries in the area. With this in mind, we built the current Red Rooster winery. Just a few kilometers from our original site, the winery is located on Naramata Bench Road. Salvaged wood from the original Naramata Train Dock was used to build the large arched doorways that form the entrances to our tasting room. The art displays, large patio and open grounds encourage visitors to stay awhile. The statue of the naked guy, well, he raises a few eyebrows.

Practices & Techniques

Our wines are crafted with a gentle approach and minimal intervention during the winemaking process. While specific processes vary from varietal to varietal, all of our wines are fruit forward, intending to bring out the best features of the Okanagan. All are ready to drink now.

Our reserve wines, however, have fuller-bodies and more structure, which makes them suitable for putting away.

This magic is brought to you under the careful watch of our winemaker, Karen Gillis.
