History

In 1956 Richard Stewart purchased the Quails’ Gate Estate knowing that it was potentially one of the best sites in the Okanagan Valley for premium grape production. Our first vines were planted in 1961 and as the years passed the uniqueness and special qualities of this rare property began to manifest into some of the best wines produced in this valley.

Over the years additional properties have been added to reflect the diversity of the Okanagan Valley. The vineyards of Quails’ Gate produce wines that exhibit complexity of our valley’s terrior. Each site provides a critical component in the hand crafting of the wines we produce.

Practices & Techniques

The philosophy of wine making at Quails’ Gate is predicated on quality over quantity. Our vineyards are solely focused on providing the winery team with ripe concentrated fruit that expresses its sense of origin. Through careful consideration of yield, the fruit quality is always maintained.

Hand crafting our wines means that we are meticulous about our winemaking process. The wine making team carefully nurtures each wine throughout the harvest and fermentation. Nothing is left to chance, and the results speak for themselves: consistency, concentration and quality.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Located on the favourable south facing slope above Lake Okanagan and below the extinct volcano of Mount Boucherie, this site is home to our most prestigious vineyards. Our vineyards are planted in soils complex with volcanic rock, rich clay, gravel and glacial till. These minerals give the wines depth, strength and character. This unique cool climate region provides good heat and ripening potential while retaining bright acidity in the fruit due to cool night temperatures. The soil composition of this location provides exceptional drainage and is ideally suited for our premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones.

All of our vineyards are meticulously managed which reflects the care and attention given to detail. Importantly, crop yields are consciously kept exceptionally low. The result of precise viticulture, an exceptional site and great soils is that the fruit sourced from this property is solely used for our extremely limited Stewart Family Reserve wines.

Sunnyside:

Located adjacent to the Quails’ Gate Estate, the Sunnyside Vineyard produces exceptional fruit. It has a variety of different soil types and as such has become home to one of our newest Pinot Noir clones, 828.

Slightly closer to Lake Okanagan, it is arguably one of the most beautiful vineyards in the valley. Its unique soil composition and slightly cooler nights have allowed for a diversified selection of varieties to be planted here.

Martyna & Kildare:

Located in South East Kelowna at a slightly higher elevation, these vineyards supply fruit that is used in our aromatic Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The clay and limestone soils, reminiscent of those in Alsace, give these wines a soft mineral character adding depth and complexity. The cooler sites allow for greater concentration of aromas producing fresher crisper wines. Careful hands-on viticulture management ensures that these vineyards provide fruit that maintains the highest quality for these wines.

Osoyoos:

Our most southern vineyard, this site is extremely warm during the day and maintains greater temperature throughout the night. The result is that the fruit from this vineyard is extremely ripe and rich in intensity.

Home to one of our oldest blocks, the 1978 plantings of Old Vines Foch reach optimum ripeness at this location. A small portion of our Chenin Blanc is supplied from this vineyard providing a layer of complexity and length of finish to one of our most famous wines.
