Chris Lanning was introduced to the world of wine while studying for his undergrad at Walla Walla in Washington state. Through a part time job while in school, he met numerous winemakers and discovered, not only his love for wine, but also, the winemaking process. After spending two years teaching, he decided to follow his passion and set out to be a vintner. He spent time studying in France and Spain and worked as a winemaker in New Zealand, France, and Washington state before settling down in his home state of Maryland and joining the Olney Winery family.

Having grown up along the Snake River in Burley, Idaho, Bob developed a love for the outdoors. One day while cycling through Olney, Bob discovered The Winery and so began a love affair with our wines. Affectionately nicknamed “Malbec Bob” he especially enjoys our Incan Roja Chilean Malbec. Bob brings a positive energy to our operation and is skilled at troubleshooting and finding solutions to any problem. Bob likes to say “every day that you make wine is a great day!”

Our history spans only a few years, but has been a fun and active one. Our winery concept came from the musings of a small group of close-knit family members and friends while sitting on Winery President Joe McCall’s front porch in nearby Silver Spring. Our official business license still bears the name Front Porch Micro Winery, LLC.

Our first Tasting Room opened in Olney in September 2012 as The Winery at Olney, but with our wines now in 400 locations around the State and with a new Tasting Room opening in Hagerstown, we recently changed our name to Olney Winery. We hope that when you hear the name Olney you will think about our wines, not just the wonderful town. The same goes for when you see our signature wine stain.

Practices & Techniques

Good Wine – In order that we may present to our customers the best tasting wine possible, we import our raw grape products from the most renown grape growing regions of the world such as Napa Valley, Tuscany, Chile, and others. Our wine making team here at The Winery then carefully ferments the product into wine using state-of-the-art equipment and proven methods. But we don’t ask you to just take our word for it, but rather encourage you to come taste for yourself.

Made Fun -- We feel that good wine is meant to be enjoyed and presented in a friendly, welcoming manner. At The Winery, our team is devoted to ensuring that each of our customers walks away having the best wine experience possible.
