Winemaker

Dr. Fredric Stern is a well-known and respected facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon practicing in Bellevue, Washington. He has been voted “Best Plastic Surgeon” by both King 5 Best of Western Washington and 425 Magazine. Dr. Stern received his medical degree at Columbia University and clinical training at the University of Washington.

Fredric’s passion for fine food and wine dates back many years, to numerous wine tasting and culinary experiences in France, Italy, Napa/Sonoma Valleys, Willamette Valley and Walla Walla. Fredric has produced fine, handcrafted wines as a “garagìste” for the past eight years and received an Enology degree at Washington State University in 2011. He brings the same passion for form and function to Noviello Vineyards that he does to plastic surgery. In addition to medicine and winemaking, Fredric is a published author, having written a medical thriller, The Endorphin Conspiracy, in 2012.

Fredric and his wife, Ana, have a second home in Orondo on the Columbia River, 20 minutes from downtown Chelan, WA. They enjoy cycling, hiking, gardening, time with family and friends, and their two Cairn Terriers.

History

The Noviello story begins in the town of Bitonto, Italy, the “City of Olives,” in the picturesque southern province of Bari. Luigi Noviello and his wife Ana Scaraggi farmed the land with a passion. After giving birth to their only child Maria, in 1896, they decided to seek greater opportunity in the New World and immigrated to Buenos Aires in the early 1900’s.

The Noviello family continued the Italian tradition of farming and became distributors of produce from the family’s plantation in “las islas,” in Tigre, Buenos Aires. With his horse-drawn wagon full of fresh produce, Luigi Noviello would leave late every evening in order to arrive first thing every morning at the Central Market in Buenos Aires to sell his produce.

Luigi Noviello was also a lover of fine wines and the family began making wine from their plantation’s grapes. Maria Noviello, their only child, married and raised a family of six children in Buenos Aires, continuing the Noviello tradition of passion for the land, cooking and winemaking. Ana Stern has fondly referred to her grandmother, “nona”, along with the women of the Noviello Family as “Brava”—valiant, passionate women work hard for their families and love unconditionally.

At Noviello Vineyards, we are striving to carry on this Noviello family tradition—New World Wines with Old World Passion.

The Team

Ana Stern | Proprietor & Director of Marketing

Ana was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the great granddaughter of Luigi & Ana Noviello. She moved to Seattle with her parents in 1970. Growing up on Beacon Hill, Ana maintained a connection to her Italian and Argentine roots, learning the art of Italian cooking and home wine making (and Limoncello!) from both her grandmother and mother.

Ana brings a strong creative presence and passion for service to Noviello Vineyards. As an event planner, Ana founded Premier Concierge, LLC in 1996 – the first corporate concierge firm in the Seattle area. Most recently Ana was a Real Estate Broker with Coldwell Banker Bain in Bellevue, focusing on high end luxury residential real estate market homes, and earning both a Silver Medal Award and a Certified Luxury Property Specialist designation.

Ana’s passion is to provide the highest level of quality service to every client she encounters. She is excited to bring the same level of service to Noviello Vineyards and has become a regular at the UC Davis Mondavi School of Wine as well as the Northwest Wine Academy, enhancing her knowledge of the industry. Additionally, Ana is committed to a healthy lifestyle, which includes staying active, cooking with locally-sourced organic foods, spending lots of time with her family and – of course – enjoying excellent wines!

Practices & Techniques

Noviello Vineyards was founded in 2014 in Orondo, Washington by Fredric and Ana Stern with the goal of creating finely crafted wines, combining Old World winemaking styles with New World techniques and reaping the benefits of the bounty of one of the best wine grape growing regions in the country.

Our winery is the culmination of a rich family tradition in the wine, fruit and olive oil businesses in both the Old and New Worlds. Maria Noviello – grandmother of co-founder Ana Stern – emigrated from Bari, Italy to Buenos Aires, Argentina and brought this rich tradition with her to the Americas.

After many wonderful travels and experiences in the wine regions throughout Europe, Argentina, Napa Valley, Oregon and Washington, Fredric and Ana Stern decided to create a winery that would be a synergy of old and new, showcasing the Chelan area’s natural beauty and amazing bounty. The Sterns believe the Chelan region is the Napa Valley of the Northwest and are proud to be a part of it.

While we are planning our permanent site in the Chelan area, Noviello Vineyards is working closely with consulting winemaker, Charlie Hoppes, of WineBoss and Fidelitas Wines, to produce fine wines that reflect our style and passion.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

We are committed to excellence in winemaking. Our Noviello Estate Vineyard Chardonnay and Syrah were planted in Orondo in 2014. Nestled above 700 feet, adjacent to the Columbia River, we believe this site is ideal for producing superior grapes and will provide the basis for a number of fine Estate wines in the future.

Noviello Vineyards in Orondo, WAAs we patiently wait for our Estate vineyard to produce fruit, we are working with consulting winemaker Charlie Hoppes to source grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Washington State.

Our red wines (Cabernet, Syrah and Bordeaux blend) come from much sought after vineyards on Red Mountain—Quintessence, Vinagium Red Heaven and Hightower. Our chardonnay from French Creek Vineyard in the Yakima Valley, which produces some of the finest chardonnay grapes in the region.
