History
The Revenir (French: ‘to come back’) Winery is an extremely well-equipped, versatile, modern winery located near Lenswood, in the cool and crisp Adelaide Hills.
Formerly the Nepenthe winery, it was built in several stages between 1997 and 2006 under the watchful eye of inaugural Nepenthe winemaker Peter Leske, It remains, a state-of-the art facility, purpose-built for super-premium winemaking. It is flexible, efficient, and boasts an impressive range of equipment essential for quality. We have a great and dedicated team at the winery working under the watchful eye of Peter. Chris Parosn's is our young (relative to Peter and Mark) and enthusiastic winemaker responsible for most apsects of wine making and winery management. then there is Stewart Stopford who with Peter was turning the first screw on the building of the winery which commenced in 1996 when it was owned by the Tweddel family.
The Team
In 1996 Mark and Joanne packed their bags and head to New York with Moody’s working on a global approach to credit risk analysis for the telecom and utilities sector while still maintaining his role as the analyst for the Asian sector. This experience and exposure to some of the best practitioners in the credit market lead to an opportunity to work for Paine Webber in the London office focussing on the Asian junk bond sector between 1997 and 2000.
However, in 1998 the pull of the antipodes began to take hold and Mark and Joanne began to invest in the Australian wine industry with investments in a medium size winery in the Clare Valley and a large managed vineyard in Langhorne Creek in the Fleurieu Peninsula. Towards the end of 1999 Mark and Joanne found out that they were expecting their 1st baby and the draw of free babysitting from their parents saw them pack their bags and head back home to Adelaide. Soon after Mark convinced Joanne that they needed to be their own masters which resulted in the purchase of the land that would ultimately become the Woodlands Ridge Vineyard.
He is two thirds of the way through a Masters of Viticulture and Oenology at the Waite Campus of Adelaide University. Progress to date has been slow as the drains on his time from a growing business and a growing family - which now has four kids - has meant the Masters has become a low priority. To enhance his understanding of the winemaking game Mark has completed vintages at Hardy’s Premium Tintara winery in the McLaren Vale.
Joanne Kozned is the back bone of the business and when she isn't running the house with the four children she runs the financial side of our business as well as working part time as a Senior Manager for a Chartered Accounting firm. Jo has over 25 years of service in the accounting profession. Her well rounded experience has been developed from working both interstate and overseas. Exposure over the years to the banking and finance sector, agriculture and small and large businesses, in addition to a personal investment in the wine industry, brings a vast variety of knowledge. Jo enjoys building personal relationships with clients and their staff to develop the best and most suited accounting and business management solutions.
Monti our Winery Dog. In September 2014 we announced our most important addition to Nova Vita Wines- Monti our first winery dog. No winery is complete until it has its own wine dog and Monti joined us from Port Broughton. She is a cross between a German Short Haired Pointer and an Australian Heeler so as well as being a very loyal dog is a hard worker. Already she has been known to cruise around the winery or the vineyard chasing rabbits, birds or butterflies. Thankfully to-date she hasn't been able to catch any of them.
Practices & Techniques
We are also working with to preserve or replace natural vegetation on our vineyards. Recently we have work with the South Australian Natural Resource Management Board and in 2013 we replanted over 7 hectares of 20% of our Woodlands Ridge Vineyard to its original native state.
Estate Vineyards / AVA
It is bordered to the North by the Barossa Valley and to the South by the McLaren Vale wine regions. One of the key attributes of the Adelaide Hills wine region is the significantly cooler average day and night time temperatures during the growing season. On average they are more than 5°C cooler during the day and 10°C at night. Extended ripening conditions quite often into Autumn, generally a dry summer and the cooler average temperature all combine to produce the perfect conditions to growing premium quality grapes.
