History

Since harvest 2008, we have been on a mission to find the best Bordeaux vineyards in the Livermore Valley with one goal in mind: crafting the perfect wine. By perfect, we mean expressive of both the varietal make up and the region in which it is grown. In this case, we are talking about the Five Noble Bordeaux varieties grown here in the Livermore Valley.

With each vintage comes a better understanding of what different vineyards bring to the table as far as aromatics, color, flavor profile and texture. We have made tremendous strides in viticulture efforts to provide us the best possible raw materials. As we hone in on these benchmark vineyards’ distinctions and work with our growing partners to improve quality, we continue to trial new vineyards, opening up more and more possibilities and in the process spreading our breadth of available blending components.

In the winery we have established regimens that we feel best extract and capture the distinctions of these vineyards. We continue to trial new barrels, yeasts, fermentation methods, cellaring methods; anything we can do to get a leg up and improve.

With the 2012 vintage we felt our understanding of this Valley as a whole, as well as its individual vineyards’ distinctions, coupled with one of California’s best winegrowing seasons allowed us our best chance yet at crafting perfect wine. It was our best vintage across the board. Each site produced beautiful wines, representing their soils and locale to their fullest potential. This wine is a benchmark of not only our humble roots, but a nod to the future direction of our Supremacy program.

After five years we have enhanced our vision of the wines we strive to produce. In celebration of this new direction we are excited to reveal our new label for Supremacy. It is as bold and straight forward as our mission: crafting the perfect wine from Livermore Valley’s best vineyards; and its sleek, sophisticated profile is a sign of what to expect in the bottle.

We invite you to join in the celebration of Five Years of Supremacy. The official release is scheduled for July 2nd. We have some awesome events planned between now and the release that are available exclusively to you, our valued club members. See the next page for more details.

Practices & Techniques

From the time the vines are pruned for the growing season to the day the wine is released, no detail goes unnoticed. Flavor development starts in the vineyard, and we do everything we can to reduce vigor early on and limit our yields. This includes chute thinning and fruit dropping throughout the growing season. We harvest each block by hand when it hits optimal ripeness. Optimal ripeness to us is not a numbers driven decision, it is about flavor. When the fruit arrives at the winery, it is gently handled all the way through production. Cluster and berry sorting occurs on each lot at destemming; and we typically ferment most reds whole berry. The wines are fermented in Micro-Lots, primarily 1 ton open top bins. The must is pressed on each lot when we feel we have hit a mouth feel and flavor profile we sought after. From here the wines undergo Malo-Lactic Fermentation in barrel and are cellared in the world’s best cooperages until they have reached a maturity level. The wines are bottle aged so the day they are released they are ready to enjoy. We believe our winemaking style allows us to create wines that will age gracefully in your cellar.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Casa De Vinas – Casa de Vinas is our benchmark vineyard. The 20 acre parcel is planted to 3 clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone to Nottingham Cellars. A small section of the vineyard was planted to Malbec and Cabernet Franc exclusively for us and is used in Supremacy as well as single offering wines. The vineyard is primarily comprised of Pleasanton gravelly loam, but a number of other soils exist at this site. The soil provides incredible drainage, almost no signs of water the day after rain. The wines are big and rich and absolutely delicious.

Smith Ranch – The rolling hills provide beautiful benches in the land with an array of different exposures to the sun as well as elevation and soil changes. The site was meticulously designed to take full advantage of these varying factors. Block 470 is farmed to produce rich, dense wines – no detail goes unnoticed. The goal is to set very little fruit and tighten it up throughout the growing season. We prune to one chute per position and one cluster per shoot. The resulting wines are phenomenal. Block 420, the top bench, is a bit more vigorous early on and sets a bit more fruit. This area of the vineyard can handle the load as it consistently delivers wines we are thrilled with.

Harris Tesla Vineyard – This high elevation vineyard boasts not only exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, but easily one of the most stunning views one will ever see. It sits on a hilltop smack in the middle of the South Side of Livermore overlooking the majority of the region. The Cabernet Sauvignon is equally as stunning. The clone 337 Cabernet is V trellised and oriented east and west along the ridge. This makes for wines that are rich with fully developed flavors. The vineyard has the ability to harness both body and balanced acid and tannin lines. The wine is used for Supremacy and also is available as a Vineyard Designate.

Sachau Vineyard – High atop the Livermore Valley floor, off the main roads, behind the bustling wine community sits a hillside vineyard that produces world class Merlot. Planted in the late 1990’s to take full advantage of the varying hillside elevation changes and exposures to the sun, Sachau is cranking out exceptional Merlot. While staying true to its fleshy varietal character, this Merlot is certainly full bodied and boasts and much denser, black fruit profile than we are used to, and we love it! The wine is used in Supremacy and is also offered as a Micro-Lot single variety.
