Adam Mettler - General Manager/Winemaker:

A 5th generation Lodi wine grape grower, at age 16 completed multiple extension courses at the University of California, Davis and San Joaquin Delta College on winemaking. After creating multiple amateur gold medal winning wines, the family’s winery, Mettler Family Vineyards was established. The first release, the 1999 Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon was selected to be on Wine Spectators top 100 California Cabernets. Continuing a formal winemaking education, while helping to grow the Mettler brand, graduated from California State University, Fresno, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Enology and minor in Chemistry in 2002.

Immediately following took a seasonal position in South Australia for a harvest before joining the winemaking team for Fenestra winery in the Livermore Valley in late 2002. In the spring of 2005 was asked to join the Michael-David winemaking team. Currently the lead person for all aspects of the production winery including the direction of all wine brands, the winemaking team, the full time staff of 15 employees on site, as well as coordinating logistics throughout our five off-site facilities. Approaching the 6th harvest at Michael-David winery Adam continues to handle all winemaking for the Mettler Family Vineyards brand as well.

In his free time Adam enjoys fly fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Currently, lives in Lodi on a certified organic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard with wife Alyson and two sons Cooper and Brixten.

Derek DeVries - Winemaker/Production Manager

Derek DeVries is a graduate of California State University Fresno in May of 2004 with a major in Enology and a minor in Viticulture.

Born into a 4th generation farming family, the DeVries family was immersed in agriculture in the Fresno area including farming as dairy men and row crops. While attending C.S.U.F. majoring in viticulture, Derek discovered a love and passion for making wine, hence the change in major and keeping the minor in viticulture.

While at C.S.U.F, coupling his education, Derek worked many hours on the university farm, driving tractor and learning vineyard cultural practices while attending school. Then during the fall harvest, he would work late into the day with the other student winemaking team (including Adam Mettler and Jeff Farthing) sorting fruit at the winery and making the wine hands on.

Upon graduation and selectively looking to relocate his family from Fresno, Lodi seemed like the logical choice since there is already a road named here for the DeVries family. In June 2004, Derek started his winemaking career here in Lodi at Turner Road Vintners making large volumes of wine. Content learning large winery production, he learned many invaluable winemaking skills, but Derek still had a thirst for small winery production that needed to be quenched.

June 2007, a unique opportunity presented it’s self at Michael David Winery where Derek came aboard as Assistant Winemaker/ Cellar Master, here at Michael David. Derek is now a part of a winemaking team that allows him to get back to the small craft hands on winemaking style that was such an influence on why he wanted to be a winemaker in the first place.

While not making wine and spending time with his family Derek enjoys Fly fishing, golf, backpacking in the Sierras, and constantly striving to master the barbeque and wine pairing with friends and family.


“Michael” and “David” are Michael and David Phillips, two brothers whose family has farmed in the Lodi region since the 1850’s, cultivating wine grapes for nearly a century.Today Michael David Winery has extended itself to the 6th generation of grape growers in the family, with Kevin Phillips and Melissa Phillips Stroud now joining the family business. The family continues to emphasize the importance of quality wines with unique and eye catching labels.Farming with future generations in mind, Michael David Winery has adopted some of the most progressive sustainable farming practices in the state. All 750 acres of the family’s vineyards are third party certified and the states first per ton bonus was issued for contracted growers to follow in the family’s foot steps. Starting with the 2011 vintage 100% the Lodi grown fruit crushed at Michael David winery was certified sustainable.

The Team

Michael - Owner/Ceo

Michael is a 5th generation Lodi grape grower. While growing up, he farmed with his father, driving tractor at age 10 and helping with grape harvesting. After graduating from U.C. Davis, Michael began planting vineyards of varietals not typical of Lodi and began winemaking through the production of small lots as a home winemaker. In 1984, after nearly a decade of refining his techniques of winemaking, Michael, with the support of his father, decided to establish a bonded winery. With a small market storefront available for marketing the wine, the first vintage of Carignane, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay were produced from the family’s grapes. After giving up the hands on winemaking, Michael can frequently be found in the winery conferring with the winemakers and working on the blending of the wines. Michael’s goal is to show the world of wine drinkers that wines made from Lodi grapes can compete against wines from anywhere in the world. In order to promote the quality of Lodi wines, and his own wines in particular, Michael spends more than half of his time traveling in the United States. His wife Kristy often travels with him promoting the wines at trade shows, wine tastings and wine dinners. Two of his three children are an integral part of the family business while his third child is a research scientist.

David - Owner/President

David grew up in the vineyards of the family Homestead, driving tractor and selling the Farms produce at farmers markets and the local family fruit stands. After graduating from Lodi high in 1981, he attended U.C Davis majoring in International Agriculture Development. After graduating from Davis, David worked for an International cork company, importing corks from Portugal and marketing them to wineries throughout Northern California. In 1988 He met his future wife Corene and they spent the following year backpacking around the world, visiting numerous wine regions from Australia to Europe. David returned to Lodi in 1989 to work full time with his brother Michael. Together they started to increase production of their wines. David oversaw the early distribution and growth of the wines, starting with 1 distributor in Chicago in 1999 and growing to all 50 states by 2004. David travels often promoting the wines around the country, and now numerous export markets including Sweden, China, and Canada.

David and Corene live in Lodi raising their 2 sons, Connor and Joseph. David’s entire family enjoys skiing, mountain biking, running, cycling and competing in triathlons.

Kevin Phillips - Vp of Operations

Kevin Phillips is the 6th generation of the Phillips Family to farm in the Lodi Appellation and has worked for the family since 2002. The oldest and only son of Michael and Kristy Phillips he is the current VP of Operations for Phillips Farms and Michael-David Winery. His duties consist of overseeing all of the farming operations for Phillips Farms which are comprised of over 750 acres of vineyards. He runs the grower relations side of the business which has over 65 growers from 7 appellations and more than 20 different varietals. He also does all of the logistics and scheduling for each harvest and works hand in hand with the talented winemaking team at Michael-David Winery.

A huge proponent of sustainable farming, he helped transition all the family properties into the rigorous Lodi Rules for Sustainabilty Program and instituted Michael-David Winery as the first winery in California to pay bonuses to all of their growers who receive Certification in the Lodi Rules Program. As a firm believer of great wines come from great grapes, he works very closely with all of Michael-David’s growers to insure that they are paid well by producing the best quality of grapes possible.

A graduate of Fresno State in 2000, he received Bachelors of Science degrees in both Agriculture Business and Plant Science. He is a licensed Pest Control Advisor in the California and sits on the board of directors for the Lodi Winegrape Commission, is a member of the California Association of Winegrape Growers and California Association of Pest Control Advisors.

When he is not being bossed around by the 5th generation of the Phillips Family, he spends his time with his wife Lori Ann Phillips, his daughters Malelany Ann Phillips and Emery Rose Phillips. An avid outdoorsman, he spends as much of his free time as possible snow skiing, fishing and hunting in the offseason. When not hunting, fishing, or snow skiing he can frequently be found walking the vineyards with his faithful Weimaraner Blitz running at his side.

His list of accomplishments include: beer pong champion while at Fresno State from 1998-2000, runner up in the 3rd grade spelling bee championships, and not going crazy in a house full of estrogen.

Jeff - Assistant Winemaker/Laboratory Manager

A native of Laguna Beach, and having lived all of the state, Jeff is no stranger to California. Jeff has been on prominent winemaking teams from Madera County to Shenandoah Valley in Amador to Napa Valley and now in Lodi with Michael-David Winery.

Jeff was the 1st person in U.S. history to receive a M.S. Viticulture & Enology from CSU-Fresno 2004. He also received the Graduate Student Achievement Award from the Viticulture & Enology Department as well as many scholarships for research he did at Fresno State, including the highly coveted Andre Tchellistcheff Scholarship Award in 2004. Jeff’s research on high sugar fermentations has been published in scientific journals and he has presented his work at several conferences and symposiums serving the wine and grape industry. In his spare time he enjoys playing guitar, surfing, snorkeling, triathlons and being a dad.

Annie - Grower Relations

Born and raised in Napa, Annie attended Justin Siena High School where she graduated in 1996. She then went on to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and graduated with a BS in Food Science and a minor in Wine Marketing in the spring of 2001. Throughout college she continued working in the wine industry at Byron Winery in Santa Maria where she enjoyed her time in the tasting room. In 2001 she graduated and returned back to Napa where she went on to work for Napa County in both the Environmental Management and Agriculture Commissioners offices. There she worked closely with grape growers in the valley to help educate and control vineyard pests such as Glassy Winged Sharpshooter and Vine Mealy Bug.

Continuing on in the wine business, she moved to the central valley in 2002 and enjoyed a short career in wine marketing and sales for Madison Wine Company where she sold both local and California based brands in the cental valley.

After working in so many facets of the industry, Annie decided to further her career in the vineyards side of the wine industry where she enjoyed her time the most. In 2004 Annie joined the Michael-David Winery team as an assistant to Kevin Phillips, as well as taking a role as Grower Relations Manager. She currently assists Kevin in overseeing all Phillips Farms activities as well managing the vineyards office and overseeing all contracting and correspondence with all of Michael-David’s 60 grape growers.

She loves exercising, traveling, hiking, crafting and spending time with family and great friends. She resides in North Stockton with her husband Joey, son Dante and dog Wrigley.

Emiliano - Vineyard Manger

In 2001, after receiving his B.S. degree in Agricultural Business from CSU Chico, Emiliano worked as a Territory Manager for The Wine Group Inc. Emiliano was able to gain valuable industry knowledge which fueled his interest in wine grape production.

Accepting a great management opportunity, Emiliano took on the challenge of Production Manager for a vegetable seed company. He enjoyed the hands-on agricultural experience and opportunities to travel to Chile and China, enhancing his knowledge of international production.

Pursuing his interest in viticulture, Emiliano joined the team at Michael David Winery in 2007. Now entering his fourth harvest, Emiliano continues to develop his bilingual management skills and grape growing knowledge. Emiliano manages day to day field operations, including the supervision of seasonal and full time employees, and works to continue the sustainable certification of the company’s 750 acres.

At his leisure, Emiliano enjoys spending family time with his wife and two children, as well as hunting, fishing and skiing.

Melissa Phillips - Vice President of sales:

Melissa Phillips Stroud is the 6th generation of the Phillips family to farm wine grapes in Lodi. As Michael’s youngest child, Melissa grew up in the family's vineyards and spent her time as a child running around the family farm and selling produce at farmer's markets.

After graduating from Lodi High, Melissa went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study Wine and Viticulture. While studying wine, she also built up her wine knowledge and sales skills by working at Perbacco Cellars and Wild Horse Winery. She graduated from Cal Poly with double majors in Wine & Viticulture and Ag Business.

After graduating, Melissa moved to Seattle to sell the family's wine in the Pacific Northwest. During her time in Seattle, Melissa helped grow the winery's distribution in 8 states in the Northwest. After working her sales magic for 3 years, Melissa moved back to Lodi in 2010 and focused on managing the Western US and growing the winery's national on-premise accounts.

A firm believer in Michael David’s partnership with distributors, she focuses on increased sales distribution in conjunction with sales efficiencies. In 2012, Melissa became VP of Sales and oversees the winery’s distribution network of sales. She also runs all pricing and programming.

In her spare time, Melissa enjoys skiing, fishing, hunting, and traveling with her husband, Andrew.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

These days, Michael and David Phillips represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi, and things are changing. With 650 acres of premium wine grapes, there is plenty of room for experimentation and innovation. The vineyards are irrigated by the Mokelumne River, which carries crystal-clear water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, depositing minerals into the rich soils upon which the grapes thrive. Though not certified organic, Michael~David Winery strives to use all natural methods including integrated pest management, beneficial insects for pest control, trellising, leaf pulling and natural mined sulfur for mildew control.
