McCay Cellars is a small family winery: With great consideration our wines are handcrafted from start to finish. From the fields to the bottle, we monitor every detail to make sure our wines are of the finest quality. McCay Cellars produces small case lots, typically less than two hundred cases per lot all in French Oak barrels.

Michael McCay:

Michael’s winemaking style has involved native fermentation...discovering and exploring the layers and trueness of this "old world style" winemaking. Concentrating on Zinfandel and Rhone varietals has become a passion at McCay Cellars.


Michael McCay and his family have farmed in Lodi for 20 plus years. Michael came to Lodi in the mid 1980s, started making wine in 1994 and launched the McCay Cellars label in 2007.

Practices & Techniques

Lodi has some of California’s best climate for producing wine grapes. The Mokelumne Rivers’s sandy loam soil along with the Delta’s cool breezes provide the perfect and unique environment for growing wine grapes. Lodi's beautiful hot days during the summer months along with cool nights (an average of 57 degrees) help Lodi offer a wonderful climate for wine grapes…especially Zinfandel and Rhone varietals.

One sip of this fine elixir from McCay Cellars and Lodi Zinfandel should earn some equity in your cellar well at least a bottle placement or two. Wines of this pedigree are not all that common these days and Lodi should be getting a little more love from wine consumers who appreciate a Zinfandel with finesse. The initial aromas are reminiscent of a late harvested fruit smoothie made with blackberry, sweet Oregon cherry, hazelnut and a hint of figs. On the palate it is a texturally pleasing wine that is lush, plush and sensual. The big berry swirl flavor continues to come through all the way to the long lingering finish making this a perfect match for fall tailgating grill items and slow smoked southern BBQ.
