Matello Wines is formed by Marcus Goodfellow and friends Drew Falkman and Bill Hanson with a desire to live, work, and enjoy ourselves while producing Oregon wines. Our first vintage is 2.9 tons, sourced from 3 separate vineyards and yielded 186 cases of Pinot Noir.

Influenced by our love of the wines of Cristom, we ferment our first grapes using 33% whole cluster (grapes and stems) in one fermenter. The resulting wine is the first of what will become "the Matello style" as well as the first bottling of our tête de cuvee called Souris.

Our first single vineyard bottling comes from fruit from the Whistling Ridge Vineyard. This begins a long relationship with the family at Whistling Ridge and over the years Patricia and Richard come to own a very special place in our hearts, not only helping to shape the wines we make, but also the people we are becoming.

"That which does not kill you makes you stronger". We survive Oregon's most difficult vintage to date only to find that while 2007 was extraordinarily challenging it have forged us into people confident in cellar and with renewed belief in our vineyards. The wines took a little time, but became some of our favorite wines: delicate, nuanced, extraordinarily pretty, and above all, Pinot Noir.

Gaironn Poole, local sommelier and Matello fan joins the Matello team.

We join the Deep Roots Coalition in Oregon, a group of wineries that choose not to irrigate the vineyards they work with in order to preserve the individual nature of the fruit. A wonderful group containing many of Oregon's top craft wineries. The same year, we choose to limit ourselves to only Willamette Valley grapes, and to only work with smaller vineyard sites.

The Team

Marcus Goodfellow chose apprenticeship over formal schooling, working at Evesham Wood and assisting at Westrey. He also credits Steve Doerner of Cristom for giving him an affinity for whole cluster fermentation. He developed his appreciation for the infinite variation of beauty expressed through grapes while working at the Heathman Restaurant with Chef Philippe Boulot.

Raised on an 80 acre farm outside of Silverton, Oregon, Marcus developed his work ethic and connection to the land growing up surrounded by Oregon's natural bounty. While goats, cows, blueberries, apples, and currants were part of his early life, grapes didn't play a part until after he had left home and began a 20 year career in some of Portland's finest restaurants. He founded Matello in 2002 making 2.9 tons of Pinot Noir in a small corner of the Westrey Winery. In 2005 he moved Matello to a co-operative facility. Finally, in 2011, he and Gaironn Poole, opened their own brick-and-mortar winery in McMinnville, Oregon.


Gaironn PooleUpon moving to Oregon in 2003, Gaironn knew she wanted to change her focus from her previous work in Marine Biology in Texas. Enrolling with the ISG (International Sommelier Guild) focused her interest and passion on wine, and she has never looked back. After obtaining her Sommelier Certificate she has since spent years at New Seasons Market as a wine steward, a Sommelier for Bluehour, Wine Curator for Bruce Carey restaurants and most recently a sales representative for a local wholesaler, Galaxy Wine Company. Thus, she brings a perspective of many sides of the industry to Matello. Joining the team in 2009 she is involved in all aspects of Matello, except making the wine, she leaves that to Marcus.
