Louis Lucas: Originally from the Central Valley of California, Louis Lucas is one of California's premier grape growers. His vast knowledge and viticultural expertise span over four decades making him a sought after speaker, consultant, and advisor.

Royce Lewellen: Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Royce Lewellen graduated from the University of Missouri and U.C. Berkeley's Boalt School of Law. A retired Superior Court Judge, businessman and community leader in Santa Barbara County, the courthouse complex in Santa Maria, CA was officially named the The Lewellen Justice Center in his honor. "The Judge" embarked on his latest venture in 1996 with renowned wine grape grower Louis Lucas. With their long time love of wine, Royce and Louis have set out to produce the finest wines in Santa Barbara County.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Total Lucas & Lewellen acreage in Santa Barbara County exceeds 400 acres. The fruit from the Lucas & Lewellen vineyards is highly sought-after by many winemakers.

The 67-acre Goodchild Vineyard lies along both sides of the acclaimed Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. The vineyard soils vary from clay and gravel river deposits to hillside and hilltop sites. These vineyards have been producing high quality and prize-winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from vines planted 25 years ago. The cool climate of he Santa Maria Valley allows those two varieties to excel.

The Los Alamos Valley Vineyard is over a mile long, and runs along Highway 101 south of Los Alamos. Cooler than the Santa Ynez valley but warmer than the Santa Maria Valley, the intermediate climate of this area and thick layers of clay and loam soils resemble those of Pomerol (Bordeaux) This vineyard is planted with Rhône, Burgundy, Bordeaux and Italian varieties including Malvasia Bianca, Moscato, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese. Some of the vines, originating from cuttings brought over from Europe, are over 25 years old. This is a cool climate vineyard with deep loamy soils and late ripening characteristics. Their Italian varietals, including the excellent Pinot Grigio, Dolcetto, and Malvasia Bianca come from there as well.

The lower elevation of the south-facing Valley View Vineyard is known for producing excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah in addition to small amounts of Malbec and 1 and 1/2 acres of Petit Verdot. The Petit Verdot at Valley View receives maximal sun exposure and ends up being more physiologically ripe and softer than expected.
