Winemaker

Peter’s a bit of a romantic.

He dreamt of being a musician. He even gave it a good crack, until the looks on the crowds faces matched those of his band members. Pete was a crap musician.

But he was good at science. He majored in biology and chemistry at Macquarie University and went into the pharmaceutical world, working as a process chemist. But he was a romantic, and there’s little romance extracting compounds from yeast.

At the same time, his Dad wanted to get into wine. All of a sudden, he could see a romantic avenue for his skills. He jumped straight into a Graduate Diploma of Oenology (Grad Dip Oen) from the University of Adelaide, which he completed in 1996.

Now he was a winemaker, and loved every minute of it. However, it’s not all romantic. Early cold mornings, snakes, insects, drought, floods and the odd vintage destroyed.

For two decades he has made wines in styles as diverse as sparkling, crisp and aromatic white, smooth and textured white, rosé, dessert wines and reds ranging from lighter styles such as pinot noir (crushing with his own feet) through to fuller bodied longer ageing varieties.

While loving the character of rich fruit in Australian wines, Peter also admires the style and balance of old world wines. His winemaking philosophy is a hybrid of the two styles – wines with Australian fresh fruit flavours and European structure and finesse.

When he’s not making wine, Peter is selling overseas, promoting ours and Australian wines to countries as diverse as Japan, Finland, Oman and the USA.

Peter’s a busy boy. He oversees a range of grape varieties from Orange and Mudgee including semillon, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, gewürztraminer, chardonnay, riesling, viognier, pinot noir, pinot meunier, shiraz, cabernet

History

Whether it’s red or white, fizzy or sticky, funky or fruity, our family loves it. We love making it, drinking it, and most of all, sharing it.

I started Logan with my late father Mal in 1997 with our original eponymous Logan label. People seemed to like it, so I’ve made a few more wines since then. There’s our premium sparkling Vintage ‘M’ Cuvée, the quirky and popular Weemala range, the affordable quality of Apple Tree Flat and our newest range, Ridge of Tears, which heroes the best of the region.

The region is the NSW Central Ranges, specifically Orange and Mudgee, and we’ve seen it come along in leaps and bounds since we started, both as a wine region and tourism destination.

My lovely wife Hannah, who joined Logan as our Marketing Manager a year or two before we got married. Now General Manager, Hannah’s creative bent is the driving force behind our brand, directing everything from our distinctive labels to our award winning Tasting Room (aka cellar door). I knew I had met my match with Hannah. She loves wine, our family business and Mudgee as much as I do. Which is a good thing, given the two of us work pretty much 24/7 on Logan. It’s not the worst job in the world though …

Come and visit us at our award winning Tasting Room in Mudgee, taste our range of wines, kick back and enjoy the incredible view. You’ll see why both Hannah and I are more than happy to be married – to the job of making Logan wines.

THE CENTRAL RANGES:

Once one of Australia’s best-kept secrets, the appeal of the NSW Central Ranges is now widely recognised. More and more people are making the pilgrimage to the beautiful rural towns of Orange and Mudgee to experience some of Australia’s finest cool climate wines.

Located on the north and west slopes of the Great Dividing Range, Orange is the highest wine region in Australia. Its altitude, cool weather and rich volcanic soils the perfect ingredients to produce elegant wines with delicacy and depth.

Mudgee (Aboriginal for ‘Nest in the Hills’) is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and the birthplace of Australian chardonnay. Slightly lower in altitude than Orange, temperatures in Mudgee are not as cold, but conditions are still ideal to create wines of great depth and character.

MUDGEE:

Its stunning scenery, quaint township and good old fashioned pubs make Mudgee a great place to live and visit.

Logan’s vineyards and tasting room in Mudgee are located in the picturesque hamlet of Apple Tree Flat. The beautiful undulating country has rich volcanic soil laced with quartz. Its climate is mild with cool summer nights extending the ripening period.

Cool spring days and cold nights delay budburst; rainfall and humidity are low, sunshine hours are great. The summer and autumn days are warmer than Orange due to the lower altitude. The unusual intensity of the highland sunshine gives the wines incredible colour and powerful fruit flavour, while continual cool temperatures create complexity and heightened savoury characters.

Mudgee’s well-drained loam and clay soils are highly suited to viticulture and produce wines of great depth and character.

Elevation of the Logan vineyards ranges between 500 and 600 metres above sea level.

ORANGE:

The vibrant town of Orange with its stunning panoramas and sophisticated dining scene is the epicentre of NSW rural ‘cool’.

And cool it is.

As Australia’s highest wine region with vineyards ranging from 600 to more than 1,000 metres above sea level, it gets damn chilly in Orange. In fact the climate is one of the coolest in Australia with a mean January temperature of under 20 degrees. Mild days and cool nights produce fruit that retains a higher level of acid and thus greater complexity of flavour and better balance than most other Australian wine regions.

Logan’s vineyards sit particularly high above Orange. At altitudes ranging from 850 to 1,050 metres above sea level these are some of the highest vineyards in Australia. Red varieties are planted on the lower (and thus slightly warmer) sites allowing more ripeness to be achieved.

This unique combination of site and climate enables Logan to create food friendly wines with delicacy and depth.
