Winemaker

Andrew Lodmell began his wine making adventure through his love for nature and agriculture. Born in Walla Walla and a 1986 Whitman College graduate in Environmental Sciences, he returned to his roots in 1990 to manage the 4th generation family farm.

Andrew planted Lodmell Vineyards on the Lower Snake River, 40 miles NW of Walla Walla in Walla Walla County, roughly 25 years ago. As a sustainable local grower, Andrew produces high quality fruit resulting in wines with dense color and intense flavors.

In 2005, Andrew crushed the first Lodmell Cellars Estate Merlot and moved the winery production to the Port of Walla Walla Incubators.

Today, Andrew and his sister, Kristie continue to produce some of Walla Walla’s finest Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine is hand crafted and barrel aged in small lots. Additional Lodmell Cellars varietals include Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Saignee (rose), Estate Syrah, Sublime (Red Blend), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Port.

You will find our new tasting room Located in the Marcus Whitman Hotel on 2nd Street in downtown Walla Walla.

History

Welcome to Lodmell Cellars of Walla Walla. The evolution of our winery is an important part of our story and we invite you into a journey of our history. In late 1880, our great grandfather settled 30 miles northwest of Walla Walla, known as Eureka, Washington today. The vast area of virgin land was developed into dry land wheat and sustained a family of four children. The oldest child, our grandmother, grew up farming and rode a horse and buggy to Walla Walla High School in the early 1900’s. Our grandmother married a Lodmell in Walla Walla during the roaring 1920’s. She never gave up her interest in the farm, always taking notes of wheat prices, the weather and year to year bushels per acre. This “best practice” and knowledge of farming has been passed down two generations.

Today, our father, Miles, and Andrew have diversified the land in the Eureka area within Walla Walla County. A portion of the land is home to Lodmell Vineyards. Our original 15 acres of grapes was planted in 1995 and continues to produce some of Walla Walla’s finest Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. We recently added another 15 acres of grapes to include Semillon, Syrah and Cab Franc. Lodmell Vineyards is a 30 acre Estate Vineyard on the lower Snake River; this was our inspiration in designing our wine label with a snake.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Lodmell CellarsLodmell Vineyards:

Lodmell Vineyards is dedicated to growing the highest quality fruit that our terroir can produce. By maturing our vineyard slowly by limiting vegitative growth and crop loads, we have created ideal conditions that will enable us to consistently produce fruit bearing complex flavors and intense color. Lodmell Vineyards is located on bluffs above the Snake River near Fishhook Park in Walla Walla County. It has a southern sloping exposure. The soil is a Ritzville loam underlaid by fractured basalt. Our site is hotter and dryer with better air cirulation than sites located closer to Walla Walla.

Spring Creek Vineyard:

Source—Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay

At 1200 feet, the fruit from Spring Creek ripens slowly and retains a high level of acidity.

Alder Ridge Vineyard:

Source—Syrah

Alder Ridge is a special vineyard site because of its location and varied topography. Within the vineyard there are a large number of small blocks that lie on different slopes and on different terrain. The vineyards range from 75 feet above the river to virtually the top of the ridge—close to 1000 feet. Instead of being just one long expanse of vineyard, Alder Ridge has a great deal of variation, which offers the winemaker a variety of lots from which to choose.

The vineyard also has good air drainage, excellent exposure to the sun and volcanic soils that are perfect for producing grapes with intense fruit flavors.
