Jesse Lange, Don’s son, joined the winemaking team in 2004, continuing the legacy of Lange Estate. Jesse also holds the title of General Manager and serves on several industry boards including: President of Oregon Pinot Camp, former President of the Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association, and the Willamette Valley Wineries Association. Currently, the father/son duo bottles six different Pinot Noirs, focusing on terroir through small lot, artisinal wine-making philosophies. Lange Estate sets the standard for truly hand-crafted wines.

Thirty years ago, Don and Wendy Lange founded their winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley. The year 1987 marked the Langes’ first vintage and consisted of the three varietals they embrace today: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.

Practices & Techniques

Sustaining this beautiful environment, without which the art of making wine could not be imagined, is very important to us. By purchasing Lange Estate wines, you are helping to support a philosophy of sustainability and our continued pursuit of what is best for your palate and our planet.

In 2008, Lange Estate Vineyard achieved the highest level of viticulture certified sustainability through the Low Input Viticulture and Enology (LIVE) program, and has continued to pass the stringent requirements every year since.

As part of our LIVE certification, we are proud to be Salmon-Safe certified as well. Salmon-Safe certification for winegrowers focuses on reducing runoff from hillside vineyards and enhancement of native biodiversity on vineyard sites.

ECO SeriesTM Glass

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, we have made the decision to bottle the majority of our wines in ECO SeriesTM glass. These bottles reduce stress on the environment by using recycled glass, optimized and green energy in manufacturing, and lighter weight glass (reducing the transportation impact). Glass is also a 100% recyclable material, and we encourage our customers to recycle their wine bottles after they have enjoyed what’s inside.

Solar Panels

The installation of our 41 Kilowatt solar system has recently been completed at the winery. This array of solar panels will cover half of our electricity needs and keep thousands of pounds of CO2 out of our atmosphere. Additionally, we have 12 kilowatts of solar panels on our properties. Our combined 53 kilowatts of solar energy has the yearly
CO2 cleansing ability of 13,780 trees!

More Sustainable Practices

Lange Estate has installed a water retention system off the roof of our barn, allowing us to reuse rain water for irrigation and spraying, instead of pulling water from the well.

During harvest, we compost all of the stems, seeds, and skins left over from crush for use in the vineyard to aide in growing the next season’s crop. We also compost organic waste from the kitchen and take pride in recycling as much as possible, including used foils/capsules from our bottles.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The Lange Family owns 60 acres of land on three properties here in the Dundee Hills. A total of 45 acres are planted with a mix of Pinot noir, Pinot gris, and Chardonnay vines.

The original Lange Estate Vineyard (30 acres) was purchased in 1987 and first planted in 1988 with a mix of all three varietals.

The Mia Block (15 acres) was purchased in 2003 and first planted in 2004 with Pinot noir vines. This block is adjacent to the original estate and named for Wendy Lange‘s middle name.

Redside Vineyard (15 acres) was purchased in 2006 and first planted in 2007 with Pinot noir vines. The vineyard is named for the gorgeous “Redside” trout which are native and indigenous to the Deschutes River Basin. “Redside” is also a reference to our red, volcanic soils found on all of our properties.

Lange Estate Winery is proud to be a located in the prestigious Dundee Hills Appellation, which is known for its volcanic soils (Jory and Nekia). These soils are deep and provide good drainage. Grapevine roots are encouraged to grow deep into the earth where the rich soils can provide nourishment. The ideal growing conditions provided by the soil, elevation, and climate of the Dundee Hills produce consistently excellent wines.

To further supplement our case production, the Langes purchase additional fruit from the best vineyards in the surrounding area. Long-standing relationships with these blue-ribbon sites have helped the winery establish a well-deserved reputation for consistency and complexity in the wines.
