Winemaker

Zach Long, who comes to Kunde Family Estate from Napa Valley’s Girard Winery, brings a wealth of international and domestic winemaking experience. A graduate of the University of California at Davis in Viticulture and Enology, Long has experienced winemaking in some of the world’s most acclaimed wine regions including Bordeaux, France, Tauranga, New Zealand, and the Napa Valley. His most recent experience, at Napa Valley’s Girard Winery, allowed him to focus solely on ultra premium red and white wines and to develop his expressive winemaking style, which he describes as “terroir-driven with minimalist intervention.”

“Kunde Family Estate is one of the most unique properties in the Sonoma Valley and the quality of its estate-grown, sustainably farmed fruit is a winemaker’s dream,” said Long. “My goal is to not only produce the absolute best terroir-driven wines possible, but to also uphold the legacy of the Kunde family by letting the vineyards speak through each bottle of wine I craft.”

History

Louis Kunde established one of the first wineries to be bonded by the state of California in the early 1900’s. Now, with California bond numbers in the tens of thousands, this bond number is a testament to the Kunde family legacy, not only in Sonoma Valley, but also the entirety of California winemaking history. Today, the new, state-of-the-art Kunde Family Estate Winery is a symbol of the past and a nod to the future, proudly bearing the estate’s century-old Bonded Winery Number 202.

Practices & Techniques

At Kunde Family Estate, our winemaking mission is to craft elegant wines with a real sense of place—beautifully balanced and expressive of our dramatic vineyard landscape.

As 100% estate produced wine, each bottle speaks to the distinct soil, climate and topography of our fifth generation sustainably farmed property, nestled in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Nature is the dominant force in our terroir-driven winemaking approach. Sun-drenched days, moderated by cool coastal fog and southerly wind, combine with volcanic gravelly soils and dramatic topography. The result is an ideal backdrop for creating balanced fruit, and full-flavored, complex wines. As winemakers and stewards of the land, we guide the process from vine to bottle by promoting healthy vineyards, walking every row, and sampling every barrel.

Each fall, grapes are hand-harvested in small batches during the cool early morning hours, then gently crushed and de-stemmed at the winery. We employ classic winemaking techniques for all of our estate wines, including the use of native yeasts during fermentation, sur lie aging prior to racking to enhance complexity and depth, and barrel aging in a mix of French, European and American oak for overall balance in the final blend.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The breathtaking Sonoma Valley winegrowing region, home to the Kunde Family Estate, is highly acclaimed for a reason. It provides the perfect climate for growing balanced, evenly ripened fruit. Mountain ranges protect vineyards from extreme weather off the Pacific Ocean, while southerly winds and coastal evening fog moderate warmer temperatures throughout the sun-drenched valley. The valley floor, hillside and mountainside vineyards found on our estate experience varying degrees of fog, wind and sun exposure during the growing season. The geographic and climatic diversity of Sonoma Valley results in age-worthy wines of great complexity and structure, from elegant, balanced reds to delicate, vibrant whites. Our estate terrain, combined with this ideal climate, allows us to consistently offer a diverse portfolio of 100% estate produced wines.
