Hidden Chapel Winery

About

We are a small, boutique winery. We believe great wine is an expression of the area it comes from…it’s grown, not made. A combination of soil, sun, vine & man, our wine begins with its roots deep within the sandy loam of the northern tip of the Great-Basin Desert. It is then ripened by the hot Okanagan sun and finally aged in our unique underground cellar, which is overlooked by the Hidden Chapel. Come visit our cheery tasting room, view the underground cellar & experience the Hidden Chapel nestled in the pines surrounded by beautiful gardens. We believe our wines are blessed by the Hidden Chapel...tasting is believing!

History

Our story began in 2005 when Deborah Wilde & Lanny Kinrade purchased land that would eventually be Hidden Chapel Winery. Its attributes included a gorgeous setting overlooking neighbouring vineyards, beautiful gardens & a little chapel nestled amongst the pine trees at the back of the property. The vineyard of cabernet sauvignon grapes was planted in spring 2006.

Over a glass of wine, Lanny & the boys decided that the location of an old pool on the property, which had not been used for 14 years and was located at the side of a hill, would make an ideal place for an underground wine cellar. In the summer of 2007 construction began on the 1000 square foot structure.

Over the next couple of years an old garage on the property was renovated to make the winery building area and over a few more glasses of wine, we came up with the name of Hidden Chapel Winery. In 2009 we obtained our official wine license to produce wine. Since wine has to age, our first wines were not offered for sale until summer of 2010.

The wine shop was finished in spring 2011 and officially opened the May 24th weekend.

The Team

The vineyard was planted by Lanny & Deborah and is tended on a daily basis by Marg Kinrade.

Practices & Techniques

Pruning, thinning, tucking, leaf pruning & harvest are all done by hand. Sustainable vineyard culture includes conservation of our precious water with a drip irrigation system & control of the noxious weeds, including the invasive puncture vine, again all done by hand.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Hidden Chapel's vineyard is young & prime. With the South Okanagan's superior growing conditions, planted in 2006, our estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon vines are producing exceptional fruit resulting in full bodied wines bursting with flavour.

In addition to grapes produced in our vineyard, we bring in grapes from other growers in the Okanagan. Our neighbour, Swaran Chahal (right, centre)produces grapes in the same meticulous manner as Lanny. Swaran's grapes come from the property adjoining Hidden Chapel as well as a property he owns in partnership in Osoyoos. For 2013 Swaran is planting some new white vines to produce new varieties of white wine for Hidden Chapel Winery including Gewurztraminer, Semillon, & Muscat.

Our Sauvignon Blanc grapes, which are an integral part of our White Wedding Blend come from Terry Water & Cathy Banks (& their dog Miles) Trout Creek Vineyard in Summerland.
