Heritage Vineyards offers an exciting selection of award-winning red and white wines crafted from their own estate vineyards. Visit the Tasting Room for a wine sampling. Guided tours of the winery are available every Saturday. Visit the Heritage Tasting Room any day of the week for wine tasting. Tasting includes five wine samples. The classic tasting sheet features some of the winery’s most popular wines crafted from Heritage estate vineyards. Guests can also select to taste from the reserve tasting sheet, which highlights Heritage Vineyard’s most limited and highly rated wines. Tasters will learn about our vineyards and winemaking philosophy from our friendly and knowledgeable staff. For those that prefer something on the sweeter side, a specialty list of sweet & semi-sweet wines is available upon request.

Sean Comninos has been producing fines wines at Heritage Vineyards since the 2009 vintage. During his time with Heritage, he has garnered high praise from wine critics and the media. His 2009 Bordeaux-styled blend “BDX” was rated 94 points by the Beverage Testing Institute and marks the highest score for a New Jersey red wine from that publication.

Sean studied marine biology at the University of the Virgin Islands. After college he traveled Europe extensively, nurturing his passion for wine. Sean graduated with the highest honors from the academic program at the Wine School of Philadelphia.

Heritage Vineyards is honored to work with world-renowned wine consultant, John Levenberg. John boasts some impressive credentials for making fine wine across the globe.

-UC Davis – Masters in Viticulture and Enology
-Spent nine years working at a number of wineries in California, France, and New Zealand
-Responsible for the first L’Absolut de Quinault (Bordeaux, France), rated by Wine Spectator as one of the three best wines in Bordeaux for the 2002 vintage.
-As former winemaker at Paul Hobbs Winery in California, John produced 23 wines rated 90+ points by Robert Parker, including two 100-point wines.

Carl Hudson

Also known as the “Wine Wizard”, Carl is a retired chemist from Exxon Mobil that brings great passion and expertise to the Heritage team. His extensive knowledge of the world’s most premier wines has played a major role in elevating the quality of the Heritage winemaking program.

Practices & Techniques

The winemaking process starts with top-quality fruit from Heritage Estate Vineyards. White wine grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness & whole-cluster pressed. The juice is fermented with selected yeast strains at cool temperatures to capture & enhance fresh fruit aromas & flavors. Wines are aged, typically 4-8 months, in stainless steel vessels or oak barrels to produce different styles. The reserve Chardonnay program utilizes the more risky & time-consuming technique of barrel fermentation with French oak barrels to generate a signature cuvée.

For Heritage red wines, the goal is maximum capture & development of color & flavor. After harvesting at optimum ripeness, red grape clusters are de-stemmed and the grapes hand-sorted to remove any material not worthy of fermentation. The grapes are gently crushed & sent to a stainless steel fermentation vessel where a small portion of juice is removed (a process called saignée or bleeding) to provide raw material for delicious Rosé wines while allowing for greater extraction of color and flavor in the primary red wines. Fermentation temperatures peak early at controlled levels to capture rich fruit flavors.

Extended macerations (juice & skin contact) follow to extract optimum color, flavor & tannin profiles. Red wines are separated from their skins to give both free-run & press fractions which are kept separate. Wines are aged in premium oak barrels, a mix of American & French, for 12-18 months. Judicious tastings & experience are used to determine various options for blending & ageing to enhance the wines before bottling.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The Heritage estate located in Mullica Hill, NJ provides a special place for growing wine grapes. The vineyards enjoy a unique location on the elevated western edge of southern New Jersey’s coastal plain. This region is specifically known as the Outer Coastal Plain American Viticultural Area (AVA), one of the warmest locales in the Mid-Atlantic region, a key for growing fully-ripe, richly-flavored grapes.

The weather patterns are similar to those in Bordeaux, France, creating a favorable environment for grapes, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot & Malbec, along with the white varietal, Sauvignon Blanc. Other grape varieties also flourish in Heritage Vineyards, including Chardonnay, Syrah and Chambourcin, a dark-colored, richly-textured French-American hybrid grape that we often refer to as the “East Coast Red Zinfandel.”

Low environmental impact methods for controlling weeds & insects are applied. Time-tested techniques are used for vine pruning, cluster positioning, canopy management & yield control, all important steps in raising top-quality grapes.

Vineyard Sites:

There are currently 40 acres of vineyards planted in four distinct areas on the Heritage estate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Chardonnay are planted in rocky, well-drained soil on the north side of busy Route 322 in what was once a gravel pit.

On the lower side of the estate, near the Heritage tasting room facility, are two small vineyards, one planted to Chardonnay & Cabernet Franc,½ acre each, and another, near the festival grounds & a large pond, planted to Chambourcin.

The “other half” of the estate faces southward, sloping downhill from Harrisonville Road that essentially bisects the property. This angled southern exposure allows maximum capture of summer sunlight for the best possible ripening of wine grapes.

Along this H’ville Slope are planted blocks of Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon & Sauvignon Blanc. Finally, below the winery near a gently sloping pasture often grazed by American Indian painted horses,is planted a two acre block of Chambourcin in what is now called, Painted Horse Vineyard.
