Practices & Techniques

The 2001 vintage wines were the inaugural releases from DuNah Winery established in 2000. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from ours and other carefully selected vineyards are hand crafted into the special wines from our bonded winery in Sebastopol. The 2003 vintage was the first for the introduction of estate grown DuNah Vineyard Pinot Noir wine. Careful technique is the watchword, with the use of gentle crushing and minimal pressing, wild yeast primary and malolactic fermentations, premium French oak barrel aging, frequent lies stirring and sample tasting, minimal rackings and gravity fluid flow, all of which are followed by unfined and unfiltered bottling. DuNah Winery capacity is 2,500 cases per year.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The 10 acre forest rimmed DuNah vineyard was planted in 1998 and is located in Sonoma County on 44 acres south of the town of Sebastopol in the Sonoma Coast Appellation, and also at the southern boundary of the Russian River Valley Appellation. A spectacularly expansive view of the surrounding area is to be enjoyed from its 600 foot elevation hilltop location. Mount Diablo can be viewed 55 miles to the southeast, and the Geysers 35 miles to the north. Many wildlife species roam the area. The owner’s residence and vineyard facilities are situated at the center of and surrounded by the vineyards.

The vineyard is planted with 3 Dijon clones of Pinot Noir and 2 of Chardonnay, both on 3 disease and pest resistant rootstocks. A vertical shoot positioned (VSP) trellis system is used with 4-5 foot vine spacing on 8 foot vine rows. Typical Russian River and Sonoma Coast Appellation climate is prevalent with the morning fog below, temperate days, afternoon Pacific Ocean coastal breezes, and cool evenings. Four seasons are clearly discernable with rainfall at about 35 inches per year. Sonoma County sandy-clay-loam Goldridge soil covers the vineyard site with a layer of sandstone several feet beneath. All Perfect for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, and certainly, Luther Burbank’s Heaven!

Prior to the 2003 vintage, all DuNah Vineyard Pinot Noir grapes were delivered to Flowers Vineyard and Winery.
