Doce Robles

About

An exclusive Paso Robles westside boutique winery featuring award winning wines for decades, a small giftshop along with charming owners and staff. One of the very best wineries in all of the Templeton Gap Westside region. Taste and experience handcrafted artisan wines with no pretentions at all! Doce Robles is a family owned winery that was started by Jim and Maribeth Jacobsen. Jim and Maribeth fell in love with wines from Paso Robles around the same time that they fell in love with one another. A weekend trip to the area pushed Jim to sell his farmland in Fresno County and move to Paso to become a wine grape grower. Passion and intense interest not only led Jim to plant the vineyards, now located on the estate, but to also become a winemaker and to create the Doce Robles brand. Doce Robles focuses on making wines of great quality at affordable prices. The wines have bright structures, soft fruit, and balanced tannins. Doce Robles westside based wines are also lower in alcohol than most Paso Robles wines and made deliberately so.

Practices & Techniques

Jim’s viticulture practices consists of organic and food grade quality fertilizer. This practice greatly reduces the need for insecticides and promotes plant health producing excellent fruit. Jim’s philosophy is that “the real work is done in the vineyard”. The winemaking is done in small open top fermenters and is barrel aged for 2-3 years in French, American, or Neutral Oak. The wines are mostly gravity fed and only pumped twice from the field to the bottle which preserves ripe fruit characteristics and prevents bruised fruit.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The vineyard was planted in 96-97 and includes Barbera, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Primitivo was added to the estate in 2010. Petite Sirah and Malbec were also planted in 2012. Remaining small, Doce Robles Winery produces 4000-6000 cases annually. The wines available in the tasting room are mostly estate with a few wines having fruit sourced locally in Paso Robles.

The first harvest happened in 1998 and produced grapes of unusual quality for being so young. The 1998 vintages even won some prestigious awards, best of class 2 years in a row for the Robles Rojos (estate Bordeaux inspired blend). The Zinfandel and Barbera also won awards their first harvest year.
