De La Terre Winery

About

‘de la terre’ – literally ‘of the earth’ is a reference to both the vineyard soils and the earth brick construction used for our winery and cellar door. We encourage you to approach a trip to de la terre winery as a destination visit. Visitors can expect an intimate experience in a unique winery. We offer full and informative tastings and guests are often invited to step through into our production area to learn about our winemaking techniques and philosophy which may include a tasting of unfinished wines from tanks or barrels. Virtually all the building work was done by us – from laying the mud bricks and fitting the cedar roof shingles, to making and installing all joinery and cellar door furniture. The cellar door features leadlights with a large stained glass viewing window through into the winery. The furniture in the cellar door is made from recycled native timbers. Both the leadlight windows and the furniture were handcrafted in Tony’s rammed earth workshop adjacent to the winery. Tony has over 30 years experience as a winemaker. Leaving the corporate winemaking world in 2005 to establish this unique boutique winery, he currently works as a winemaking consultant for a number of clients throughout New Zealand and overseas. Food platters are available for guests to enjoy with wine in our garden area or cellar door. We offer casual tasting at our tasting bay as well as structured tastings with accompanying tasting notes. In addition to wine, we sell a range of our hand crafted products at the cellar door. These include stained glass works, furniture, trout flies and sculpted textiles.
