De Beaurepaire Wines

The winery grows cool-climate grapes (above 600m altitude) and aim to produce wines of elegance and finesse – in style between French and Australian. We select the best parts of our grape crop to convert into our own wines (over 90% of our grapes are sold to some of Australia’s best known wine producers). One of Australia’s leading independent wine-makers, with experience in both Australian and French styles, selects the grapes and makes wines to meet our objectives.

Location Description

Domaine de Beaurepaire is located just outside the historic township of Rylstone, about 50 km southeast of the equally historical town of Mudgee.

We have carefully evaluated and entrusted the making of our wines to a small number of excellent contract winemakers over the past 9 years. Jacob Stein has brought his great skills and a passionate attention to detail to the making of our wines in the last two years. He has been able to capture the French wine-style which has been our objective, utilising the cool micro-climate and limestone-based soils of Rylstone. As we expand our range and make updated versions of existing wines, we look forward to a continuing development of our “French” style under Jacob’s hand.

Jacob Stein, as chief winemaker at Robert Stein Vineyard, has recently been awarded one of the most prestigious national awards in the wine industry - Gourmet Traveller Wine ‘Young Winemaker of the Year 2012’.

After graduating from University, he spent 5 years away from Mudgee, visiting and working in many wineries in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. He worked in Germany, Italy, Canada, Western Australia and Victoria.

In 2009 Jacob returned to the family business (Robert Stein) in Mudgee, becoming the third-generation Winemaker. Utilising knowledge and experience gleaned from excellent winemakers in a variety of regions, he is producing a flow of wines of exemplary quality. In particular, the Robert Stein Rieslings are highly decorated and are one of Australia’s best examples. A recent release of a 2009 Cabernet Shiraz blend was the deciding factor in his latest award, the Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for 2012.

Jacob Stein’s Career Highlights

The Team

Richard had 20 years of food industry experience and a passion for wine dating back to a trip to all South Australian vineyard regions in 1971 (returning to Melbourne with a Hillman loaded with 19 cases of wine). Janet’s parents had a beef property in West Gippsland, Victoria, providing dirt-under-the-nails experience for her and Richard. During her lengthy traverse from BHP to clinical psychology, Janet’s shoes fought a losing battle with wine cases in every cupboard. Both were led inexorably to viticulture.

Extensive travel through the wine regions of Europe over many overseas-based years shaped a strong preference for the elegance and structure of cool-climate wines. With a name like de Beaurepaire ("Beautiful Hideaway or Retreat" in old French), a focus on French-style wines was obvious.

After examining a number of regions in 1997 and 1998, a leading viticulturist suggested Rylstone would be ideal for French-style wines – 600 metres above sea-level, rugged limestone soils, very cool climate (minus 8 degrees in winter). Looking at studies of vineyard economics, we settled on property fronting the Cudgegong River to plant an optimal 53 hectares of vines. This size enabled us to support an outstanding vineyard manager, source excellent viticultural advice and suitable equipment to deliver the highest levels of grape quality on a time-effective basis.

Steve Ferguson joined us in July 2013 as Vineyard Manager. He has an excellent management background at Phillip Shaw (Molong), Margan Estate (Hunter Valley) and Rylstone Olive Press. His understanding of the particular requirements of real cool climate vineyard operation was especially important.

Steve is very hands-on, which is vital in a large cool climate vineyard. He is already bringing his skills to bear and we look forward to steady and sustained improvement in all aspects.

How to find a winemaker with an interest in well-structured, elegant wines, pitched between traditional Australian and French styles, who could produce wines from cool-climate grapes and capture the regionality of the Rylstone district.

Our earlier vintages were made by the highly respected and Len Evans mentored David Lowe, who had just returned from the Hunter Valley to his roots in Mudgee.
