Travis Cook is our winemaker; in 2004 he and his family planted the estate vineyards on the cook ranch east of baker city. In 2007 following his dreams to work in the wine industry he graduated from Oregon state university with a B.S. in horticulture sciences focusing on viticulture and enology. Shortly after graduation from OSU he started working for spindrift cellars as their vineyard manager and cellar assistant. One year later he moved his focus to the north Willamette valley where he focused on developing and managing premium pinot noir vineyards in Yamhill County. Today he focuses on making wine for copper belt.

The Team

Michael Cook:

In 1983 Michael graduated from OSU with a B.S in animal sciences. He soon realized that his calling would be more on the plant production side than livestock production side. In 1987 he and his wife Cathy established eagle cap nursery just outside of baker city. In 2008 they sold the nursery to pursue early retirement. After two years they decided that they would join their son Travis in a new career of wine-making and in 2010 started copper belt wines.

Today Michael has many titles but his most important is cellar master for copper belt wines, as cellar master he manages all of the daily winery tasks from barrel topping, to bottling. He manages all of the fruit processing from the time it arrives to the winery through fermentation and barrel aging. Michael can also be found tending to the vines of our estate vineyards.

Cathy Cook:

After meeting her husband at OSU, she followed him back to eastern Oregon. After her success in marketing and sales with eagle cap nursery she found her calling in the marketing and sales for the copper belt wines. Today Cathy manages all of our sales and tasting events for the winery. She has also been instrumental in obtaining the proper certifications, licensing and documentations needed for copper belt to operate as a winery.

Krista Cook:

Wife of Travis cook and mother to Nathan cook; Krista is the family veterinarian graduating in 2007 from Oregon State University College of veterinary medicine with her DVM. Today Krista works for a small animal clinic and helps out with harvest, bottling and winery events.

Practices & Techniques

Each of our wines first start as fruit sourced from some of the best vineyards in the world, right here in the Pacific Northwest. Through care and diligence we coax the wines into something wonderful. We encourage you to stop in and try some of these wonderful wines from the Copper Belt.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Our estate vineyards are Keating Valley Vineyards. Located on the northern edge of the Snake River Valley AVA at 3,400 ft, the vineyards are the highest elevation vineyards within the state of Oregon. Established in 2004 the three acres of vines deliver a base for our Keating reserve red wine, and our estate dry Riesling. Some of the fruit also goes to build our rancher's red and rancher's white blends
