Winemaker

Danial Conte is the 3rd generation in the family business. He has worked full time in his parents vineyards for over 17 years. In his younger days he spent hundreds of hours helping out in between school, and operating all types of vineyard machinery including a mechanical harvester from age 12.

His life long involvement and dedication later included winemaking. From the year 2000 completed 2 years of full time science and winemaking (oenology) at universities of Flinders and Adelaide. Now at age 35, his love of the outdoors, passion and ability for winemaking and strong commitment to his work, family and their livelyhood has become a great assett to the business.

He has a lifetime of practical experience, a keen sense for detail and a desire for learning which has led to him being a consistantly exceptional and humble young winemaker.

Winery owner and Danial's father, Steve Conte, is a 2nd generation Conte in McLaren Vale. He contributes to the winemaking but mostly on an advisory level. At age 69, he keeps Danial in touch with the traditional Italian methods, resulting in wines that have a 'blend' of both Old and New World wine making influences. He also manages and works full time in the vineyards.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Our wines are grown on two properties, The Home Block and Tatachilla, that have been family owned and run for over 50 years.

The Home Block:

The home block of 65 acres is 5kms East of the McLaren Vale township, via Sand road. The soil types here vary between heavy biscay on clay and sand on clay.

Varieties grown include: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer & Chardonnay

This 120 acre plot of land was planted to Shiraz and Grenache in circa 1880, and was then purchased by Thomas Hardy in 1887, who named it Glen Hardy. It has significant historical importance as it was either the first or second vineyard bought, then after Thomas Hardy purchased Tintara Wine Company in 1886.

Our signature Over The Hill Circa 1880 Shiraz is produced with grapes from this original vineyard confirmed by Historian Rob Lyn to be planted circa 1880, making our Shiraz the oldest in McLaren Vale and one of the oldest in Australia.

Covering an area of 2.4 ha (6 acres), they were originally bush vines and were later trellised with posts and wire in the early 80's. Over The Hill offers fruit of great substance, intensity and grace.

Tatachilla:

Our second property, once called by it's Aboriginal name Tatachilla, is situated 3kms West of the McLaren Vale township, The soil types are made up loam on limestone, loam on clay and loam on shale, limestone and sandstone.

Varieties grown here are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay in an area of 40 ha ( 100 acres)

Our 'Rock Hill' Shiraz wine is from the block we call The Rock Hill. It covers an area of 8 ha (20 acres), and was planted over 16 years ago.

This block has a thin layer of loamy top soil overlying lots of lumpy limestone, sharp flat shale and some menacing blocks of sandstone. The vines seem to love this growing medium event though our tractors don't!

The block has a view of the sea between a neighbouring valley and immediately below is a spring fed lake frequented by pelicans, ducks and other birdlife.

The Grenache block takes up an area of 11 ha (27 acres), and was planted over 45 years ago in 1965 by Tony Conte, and his 2 sons, Steve & Rocco. These are the grapes used to make the Grenache and Grenache Shiraz wines. They were grown as 'bush' vines until the mid 80's, until they were trellised with posts and wire.
