Champagne Philippe Gonet

About

Located under the family home are the Champagne Philippe Gonet cellars. Dating back to 1783, they were hollowed out of the Champagne region’s chalk, revealing fossils on some of the walls. The house’s Cuvée de Prestige is the namesake of these fossils. A second part was added in the middle of the 20th century to accommodate the growing needs of the house. The bottles are aged on the lees for optimal ageing. This step is essential in the development of the aromas and structure of the wine. The Gonet champagnes benefit from at least 3 years ageing: much longer than the 15-month minimum appellation requirement. The family « archives » are nestled in an exceptional cellar. It is a treasure chest of old champagnes: the oldest dating back to 1893…Tasted every year in big family reunions, the members are satisfied and moved to taste their champagnes’ outstanding ageing capacity. Some « old wines » have preserved, after more than half a century in the family cellar, all of their effervescence and a distinctive freshness. The typical aromas of Le Mesnil: strawberry, mocha and truffle.

Location Description

The champagne house is located in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger village, a stone’s throw away from the prestigious S of Salon and a few steps away from the legendary Clos du Mesnil.

History

It is the story of an encounter. A historical vineyard, cultivated for almost two centuries by the same family, meets the seventh generation: a brother and a sister at the helm before their time.

A fantastic adventure began for both brother, then 22 years old and sister, 23, when they decided to take over the reins of the family business and follow in the footsteps of their father who had passed away three years earlier.

They took upon this difficult task with the ardour they inherited from the 6 generations of passionate farmers and winegrowers before them.

Pierre and Chantal, with their contrasting yet complementary personalities, share the same vision in making Champagne Philippe Gonet a winemaking reference in Le Mesnil, known worldwide for its exceptional quality wines that express the rich, pure, nuanced and mineral character of their choice terroir: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

For Champagne Philippe Gonet, soil has always evoked Chardonnay and Grand Cru.

The 19 hectares of family vineyard allies 45 parcels. One-third of their Chardonnay lots are in Le Mesnil. The average age of the vines is between 30 and 40 years with one historical parcel rooted, since 1929, at the village entrance.

Chardonnay is the Gonet’s select grape variety with parcels in the villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus, Rilly-la-Montagne, Ludes, Chigny-les-Roses, Fontaine-sur-Ay, Vindey and Montgueux. Added to the historical vineyard in the early 70s, the stunning lots in La Chapelle-Monothodon and Le Breuil mainly produce their Pinots Noirs.

Unabated attention, relentless supervision, excellent foresight and detailed knowledge of each parcel: that is Pierre Gonet’s motto. Highly concerned about the environment, he adheres to sustainable viticulture, protecting his vines and cultivating his land environmentally.

Every year when harvest season begins, the same loyal team of harvesters, sharing the high standards of the house, can be counted on. The family and the harvesters work together to vigorously select the grapes. Handpicking enables them to choose only the best quality and to identify and separate each parcel, preserving a diverse palette, expressed when creating blends. For this very reason, the house acquired a new set of small volume tanks for quality parcel selection. The grapes are pressed in the house’s traditional vertical press. Unique in the Champagne region, the press enables a slow and precise extraction, respecting the juice and preserving the nuances of the terroir.
