Castillo's Hillside Shire Winery

It is our desire at the Shire, to treat you to our smooth and savory blends which will captivate the most unquenchable palate. Our Oak aged, handcrafted wine is a drinkable gem born form vineyards infused by the peaceful surroundings that only nature can provide. We have been privileged to plant, to nurture and to harvest the clusters of fruit that hang in abundance from the vines that decorate the hillside. We welcome you to experience the offerings of the vines in the comfort of the gardens of the European Styled Estate. Each day in the tasting room, magic occurs. Arrive and instantly slip back into the real you. Relax and meet with others who appreciate wine, art, conversation and music. Friendships are made as you stroll through the grounds which rise up to greet you with a calm and soothing embrace. Sit near the pond and take a moment to reflect or meditate. It is our pleasure to share it all with you!

Nate Castillo's passion lies in many areas. Just out of high school he studied Kinesiology and became a certified massage therapist. He went on to teach advanced snowboarding and he taught skiing to children and people with disabilities.

Music of course is a lifelong passion and he is an accomplished song writer who plays drums and guitar. Nate may be one of the only Singing Sommeliers in the area. If it is slow in the tasting room ask him to sing a song or two. The HTC mini phone purchased 10million units of a song written by Nate performed by Shane Smit, previously of Overtone and the reality series Mrs. Eastwood and Co. Nate and Shane are in production with another song or two, so we will be waiting to hear the next one on the radio!!

Now, you know where his loyalty lies when we can’t get him to leave his tasting room to go snowboarding. His passion for wine exceeds all others. He loves learning and teaching about wine. He gets excited to know the reason that many of the alcoholic beverages exist. The architecture & history of wine is so interesting and he loves to share it with others. It is also a social tool that hurdles language or cultural separations. As one of the youngest Winemakers in America, Nate is doing his best to create a protocol for the Santa Clara Valley and to be a part of putting our region on the world map of wine making.

The Team

Vivienne Castillo:

Vivienne has been drawing since she could hold a pencil. She has created our marketing and label art which is collected by many. You will find some of her paintings hanging in the tasting room alongside the bottles which display her creativity.

Vivienne is currently working on the graphics for a Video game. She is an accomplished singer of Opera and all other genres of music. She plays guitar and composes her own music and lyrics. She has traveled extensively and performed at Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln Center, Notre Dame and the Madeline in Paris. She performed many concerts throughout Italy including mass at the Vatican.

Roni Jo Castillo:

Roni Jo finds much gratification working with her family and getting to know the patrons who visit. To her, the best part of the wine business is cultivating relationships and observing others doing the same.
She loves to sing and with the urging of her kids has begun to entertain folks in the tasting room upon request. She also had the privilege of singing mass at the Vatican with her daughter Vivienne. Roni Jo makes her own lavender oil and blends essential oils for healing and is a practicing Hypnotherapist and Aromatherapist as well. She has participated in the design of the exterior and created the designs of the interiors on the property.

Jesse Castillo:

Although he works all week running Castillo Construction, Jess can usually be found at the property on the weekends. He continues to make improvements to the Estate that welcomes visitors from all over the world.

Jess is proud to share his stunning creations with all who find their way to the Shire. He is also known for the food he prepares for friends, family and Wine Club Members. We all look forward to anything he may desire to share with us.

Michael Peters:

Hey All,
A little introduction… I was lucky to have grown up in the vineyards of Alexander and Russian River Valleys. By the age of 12, I was driving a tractor and working the vineyards with my father and grandfather. Along with the Four generations of family farming that preceded me, I found my passion to be in the winery. An Enology and Chemistry Degree from Fresno State would be the building blocks for me to dive in to a blessed life of winemaking and a journey around the world!

I have been very fortunate to work with some of the most passionate winemakers and visionary people in the industry. I have spent 20+ years making wine at Sonoma Creek Winery, Rombauer, Frank Family Vineyards and Quivira to name a few. After seeing the level of exceptional quality of wines being produced, including a string of 90-94 point wines, my goal was to make wines that would be placed among the elite. Hence my winery, Kasuari Wines was born with the desire to find great vineyards and make wines from them!

The Castillo’s!! A family of driven, artistic and passionate people tackling the challenging world of winemaking AND grape growing!! Two completely different disciplines, neither for the faint of heart. As an advisor to Nate (Wine Maker & Super Sommelier) and Jess (or Jack of all trades), we strive to weave the fabric of a talented family, coupled with their passion, into a legacy of making great wines that will be compared to the best wines of the world!! We are in the early days of crafting the terroir of the Shire to take advantage of the best that the Santa Clara Valley has to offer!
