Brunton Road Wines

About

Situated on the fertile plains of Gisborne, New Zealand. We love wine and living on the land and all our fine wines are crafted from the highest quality fruit grown on our vineyards in the Patutahi Plateau area of Gisborne. Located on the historic Matawhero Wines property, the charm of the old rustic building, along with a great vineyard setting creates the perfect surroundings to sample our fine wines. Gourmet antipasto platters and cheese boards are available at all times and we have plenty of outdoor tables to enjoy the vineyard setting. We also have live music on Sundays throughout summer.

History

BRUNTON ROAD WINES was etablished when Richard and Kirsten Searle returned from overseas to live on the family vineyard. Along with Richard’s parents, Philip and Margot they have grown grapes for more than a decade and wanted to produce a range of wines, highlightling Gisborne as a region of quality and diversity. From the very first plantings, emphasis has been placed on viticultural excellence as the starting point for producing these wines, which reflect the flavoursome and elegant characteristics of the Gisborne fruit. With 20 hectares of vineyard situated in the Patutahi Plateau region, the warm climate and deep soils offer the texture and complexity showcased in our selection of fine wines.

The Team

Our wines are predominantly made in the vineyard. From the low yielding vines, to the gently picked whole bunches, every viticultural attention is provided by our consultant viticulturalist Jeremy Hyland, producing premium fruit to craft a great wine.

Practices & Techniques

Brunton Road's two Patutahi blocks have been managed under the New Zealand Winegrowers Sustainable Winegrowing scheme. This scheme encourages member growers to embrace the appropriate environmental and economically sustainable wine grape production methods for New Zealand conditions.

"SWNZ is a holistic approach to grape growing.... SWNZ incorporates many features dear to the 'organic' movement (for example by recognising the importance of soil health and incorporating strategies to maintain it) but stops short of prohibiting man-made inputs..."

SWNZ Handbook

As an accredited member of SWNZ, we are required to self-assess using a sustainable scorecard and are audited each year for compliance. Our first vineyard audit was completed last year and we reached "Accredited Vineyard" status in February 2009.

Brunton Road also operates a biodynamic programme consistent with our philosophy of scientifically based minimal input viticulture. This includes no herbicide use in our vineyards.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

At Brunton Road, we recognise that exceptional wines are created in the vineyard and reflect the unique terroir and character of the land.

Our vineyards are situated in the Patutahi Plateau region of Gisborne:

BRUNTON ROAD VINEYARD

Patutahi Block:

Brunton Road, Patutahi Plateau, Gisborne - Established 1998
Size: 12ha
Soil: Waihere Heavy Silt Loam and Kaiti Clay Loam
Grape Varieties: Merlot, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Viognier

Tiniroto Block:

Brunton Road, Patutahi Plateau, Gisborne - Established 2005
Size: 8ha
Soil: Waihere Heavy Silt Loam
Grape Varieties: Pinot Gris

Elevated views sloping towards Gisborne City, and a combination of Waihirere heavy silt loam and Kaiti clay soil, contribute to one of the premium grapegrowing sites in the Gisborne region

Patutahi Plateau is the youngest of the new appellations in the Gisborne region and this area runs west from about Kaimoe Road back towards the hills. It is generally a warmer and drier area of the plains and is less effected by sea breezes.
