Winemaker

Simon Rafuse joined Blomidon as our Winemaker in 2009. Simon brings a wealth of international experience to the winery, having earned a Master of Viticulture and Oenology degree from SupAgro Montpellier in France. He honed his craft working at Shaky Bridge Winery in New Zealand and at Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and Chateau de Lancyre in France. A native Nova Scotian, Simon jumped at the opportunity to return to his home province to make wine. “Nova Scotia is a really interesting wine region because our climate allows us to achieve such unique character in our wines,” says Simon, “The terroir really shines through.”

History

The Canning area was once known as Rivière de Vieux Habitants, due to its proximity to the Rivière de la Veille Habitation (Habitant River) and named for the residents of Acadie (Habitants) who cultivated the land in the region. Following the Acadian expulsion in 1755, the land was re-settled by New England Planters. This area, along the shores of the Minas Basin, was once a well known area for shipbuilding and the famous Annapolis Valley orchards. In fact, Canning was once known as Apple Tree Landing.

The Team

Gordon Weld - Office Manager

Gordon joined our team as Office Manager early in 2014. An Acadia alumnus from Bedford, Nova Scotia, Gordon has lived in the Annapolis Valley since moving here in 2009 to attend university. “It’s easy to catch onto the local enthusiasm that we have for Nova Scotia wine”, he says. “I couldn’t be happier sharing our excitement about the industry and area with our visitors.” Gordon spends his free time playing music, exploring the Valley countryside, and trying out as many new and exciting craft wines and beers as he can get his hands on.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The Blomidon Estate Vineyard is located on the shores of the Minas Basin, near Canning, in the Annapolis Valley. Many of the blocks were planted in 1986, giving us some of the oldest vines in the province. With 18 acres of vines spread over the 25 acre property, the site benefits from its close proximity to the water, as the tides and sea breezes moderate the temperature and help prevent disease. The soils are sand and loam, offering excellent drainage and the gentle, south-facing slope provides for excellent sun exposure. The Blomidon vineyard is planted with established Baco Noir, L’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc and Chardonnay, with newer plantings of Riesling, New York Muscat and some experimental Vitis vinifera varieties.
