Practices & Techniques

Clonal diversity:

We grow four different clones of our Cabernet Sauvignon, two different clones of Cabernet Franc and four different clones of Merlot on our same vineyard. Each clone has differing ripening and taste profiles, and each is crushed, fermented and barrel aged separately. When they are eventually blended together after barrel aging, this Clonal diversity gives multi-faceted depth and complexity to our Nota Bene. This depth and complexity is the hallmark of our flagship wine, and it all starts in our vineyard.

Sustainable farming practices:

We feel honoured to be the stewards of this incredible piece of agricultural land and work to harness its potential to create the best possible fruit imaginable. Likewise, we have the highest respect for the legacy of this vineyard and the role that agriculture plays in the environmental cycle. We are committed to sustainable, environmentally friendly farming and winemaking practices. All of our vines are hand picked, hand pruned and maintained by vineyard workers manually. We have been awarded Environmental Farm Plan Status by the B.C. Environmental Farm Plan. This plan is administered by the Federal and Provincial Departments of Agriculture as well as the BC Agriculture Council and the Investment Agriculture Foundation. We are proud or our agricultural sustainability and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment as we continue to operate under the best practices of the Environmental Farm Plan.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The terroir on which our vineyards sit has become recognized as some of the most exceptional in Canada. Located on the famed Black Sage road north of Osoyoos, we are right in the middle of Canada’s only official desert. This gives our vineyards a microclimate that puts us among the hottest, driest and sunniest sites in the country.

With our northern latitude we enjoy longer sunlight hours than Napa Valley does in the key growing months of June through August. Our west-facing orientation combined with our deep desert sand gives us intense daytime heat followed by very cool nights. This exceptional diurnal temperature variation allows the grapes to fully ripen by day and then retain the acidity by night. The result in that our vineyard yields intensely flavorful grapes. With careful irrigation techniques and intensely focused viticulture practices, these are ideal growing conditions for growing the Bordeaux and Rhone varietals we have in our vineyards. In fact, we are so terroir-centric in our thinking, that our winegrower lives right in the middle of our vineyard. He quite literally eats, sleeps and breathes our grapes!

Sharp Rock Vineyard:

We purchased this abandoned 34 acre vineyard in 1996, and set about planting it to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Additional varieties planted in the vineyard include Carmenere, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Variety Acres Planted
Cabernet Sauvignon 9.75
Cabernet Franc 2.34
Carmenere 2.27
Chardonnay 0.50
Malbec 1.25
Merlot 6.14
Petit Verdot 1.26
Semillon 0.86
Syrah 0.83
Total Acres Planted 25.20

Double Black Vineyard:

Double Black Vineyard is a 15 acre vineyard located just a kilometer south of our original Sharp Rock Vineyard on identical terroir. As with the Sharp Rock Vineyard it was originally planted in 1996 with virtually identical clones and rootstock of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. After managing the vineyard for a few years, we acquired it in 2011. At that time we upgraded the onsite irrigation system and replaced some redundant grape varietals with new plantings of Carmenere and Syrah.

Variety Acres Planted
Cabernet Franc 0.73
Cabernet Sauvignon 3.56
Carmenere 1.86
Merlot 3.47
Syrah 4.24
Total Acres Planted 13.86
