Winemaker

Jeffrey Stambor:

It's an exciting time to be a winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard, and I'm especially proud of the care we've taken to improve our historic Rutherford estate. Our vineyards are a rich source of inspiration, the creative spark that helps us guide our wines to reveal the distinctive flavor and personality of each terroir.

History

In 1938, Georges de Latour traveled to France in search of a winemaker and viticulturist who could bring the expertise of Europe to his Rutherford estate in the heart of Napa Valley. At France's Pasteur Institute he found André Tchelistcheff, a Russian émigré whose experience, insight and leadership revolutionized winemaking-not only for Beaulieu Vineyard but for the entire nascent Napa Valley wine industry. The vineyard and winery methods he introduced to Beaulieu Vineyard, and his pursuit of higher and higher wine quality through continuous innovation, earned him the industry's most famous title: André Tchelistcheff is The Maestro.

The Team

Jason Dodge, BV Coastal Estates:

For BV Coastal Estates I travel the state sourcing the best grapes from some of the finest growing regions throughout California. The wines have generous fruit characters and are a true expression of each particular grape varietal and region.

Domenica Totty, Burgundian and Visitor-Center Only Wines:

A respect for innovation infuses our unified approach to winegrowing at Beaulieu Vineyard; it all begins in our well-regarded vineyards and extends throughout the winery and cellars. This respect defines my approach to winemaking and inspires the excellent wines people have come to expect from us.

Practices & Techniques

Over the last century, the bold vision of Beaulieu Vineyard has become legendary. From hiring Napa Valley's first trained enologist-André Tchelistcheff-to instituting cold fermentation for white wines, we have been on the leading edge of innovation in our pursuit of excellence. Our philosophy has always been to honor the exceptional fruit of our vineyards-including our original Rutherford estates-with the kind of meticulous, hands-on winemaking that brings out their finest expression. Today this includes careful hand-sorting of grapes for both red and white wines and cold-fermentation for whites to retain their bright, vibrant character. Red wines undergo pre-fermentation cold-soaking for optimum extraction of color, flavor and tannin, small-barrel fermentation for rich oak character, extended post-fermentation skin contact and gentle basket press. Red wines are aged in oak barrels selected for their type of oak, level of toast and age. Each winemaking technique is carefully chosen to reveal the distinctive varietal personality of grapes grown in our exceptional vineyards.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Renowned Vineyards:

BV has a heritage of growing grapes on some of the best sites in Napa Valley. Beginning in 1904, with his first vineyard purchase in Rutherford - known today as BV Ranch #1, Georges de Latour propelled this wine growing region onto the world stage. From BV9 in Carneros to BV12 in Calistoga, long term knowledge of each vineyard is coupled with extensive research on clones, trellising styles, and viticultural techniques. The results are finely tuned growing practices for each location that produce the absolute highest quality grapes.

Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 1-or BV 1:

BV 1, the first property purchased by Georges de Latour, is planted to 79 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon the most prominent. In the 1990s, BV 1 was replanted to the University of California at Davis (UCD) Cabernet Sauvignon clones 4, 6 and 337. With its combination of warm days and the cooling effect of nearby San Pablo Bay, this site enjoys one of the longest growing seasons in Northern California for mature flavor development in grapes. Fruit from BV 1 is used to craft Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve Tapestry, Napa Valley and Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford.

Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 2-or BV 2:

BV 2, the second property purchased by Georges de Latour, lies just south of BV 1 on the west side of Highway 29 in Rutherford. Its 125 planted acres include Cabernet Sauvignon-UCD clones 4, 6 and 7-as well as a small amount of Merlot. Like BV 1, this site enjoys optimal sun exposure and cool fog, for a long, even growing season. Grapes from BV 2 go into our Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve Tapestry, Napa Valley and Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford.

Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 10-or BV 10:

BV 10 is located on four acres across from BV 1 and BV 2, on the east side of Highway 29 in Napa Valley's Rutherford district. This is our experimental vineyard, where we train many different varietals-including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Valdiguie and Carignane-on an array of trellising systems. BV 10 is an important part of the ongoing viticultural research that results in innovative practices that improve our wine quality.

Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 11-or BV 1:

BV 11 lies north of Rutherford in the quaint town of St. Helena, far from the cooling effect of San Pablo Bay. As a result, daytime temperatures rise high above those of the surrounding regions. Vines take root in a mix of sedimentary, gravel-clay and volcanic soils, and our 115 acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Musque. Some of the Zinfandel blocks of BV 11 date back to 1975.

Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 12-or BV 12:

BV 12 is situated in Calistoga, at the northern tip of Napa Valley. This area experiences very hot days with nights cooled by fog from the Russian River Valley that funnels through the Chalk Hill gap. This vineyard, with its wide range of soil types, is home to our most diverse set of vine plantings and inspired our Beaulieu Vineyard Maestro Collection Beauzeaux red wine, a blend of seven varietals. Among the grapes that thrive here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat Canelli, Sauvignon Musque, Merlot, Zinfandel, Touriga, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Charbono, Syrah, Sangiovese, Malbec, Carignane, Marsanne, Mourvedre and Rousanne.

Beaulieu Vineyard Ranches No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9-or BV 5, BV 8 and BV 9:

BV 5, BV 8 and BV 9 are all located in the cool Carneros region of Napa Valley. Carneros sits on the tip of San Pablo Bay, where it experiences the fog, wind and moderate temperatures that make it ideal for growing cool-climate-loving Burgundian varietals. Long-time growers in the area have discovered that Syrah and Merlot also thrive in this region's shallow, dense clay soils. We source Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, Viognier, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc from our Carneros vineyards.
