Winemaker

Susan & Jeff Vandermolen have been making wine together since meeting in 1983. Taking inspiration from their vineyard & winery experience in the Loire Valley, France in 1991, they exited the corporate world and founded the Beaufort Vineyard & Estate Winery in 2006 – the first Estate winery in the Comox Valley. During 7 vintages under the Vandermolen’s direction (2007 to 2013), Beaufort was awarded 70 national and international medals for its wines, including 2 awards from the world’s largest wine competition in London, England. In 2012, the Beaufort Winery was recognized as one of the top 3 BC wineries at the Northwest Wine Summit in Oregon.

Following the sale of Beaufort to the Cameron family in February 2014, Susan & Jeff established “Shake the Tree Business Services” which provides professional consulting services to wineries, vineyards, culinary and agri-businesses. Through “Shake the Tree”, the Vandermolens remain responsible for Beaufort’s winemaking activities, and provide additional consulting services.

The Team

Owners & Proprieters:

James Cameron & Suzy Amis Cameron purchased the Beaufort Winery in early 2014.
From Jim and Suzy… “We’re excited to build on the strong foundation that Jeff and Susan created with their award winning family of unique wines. This is our first foray into winemaking and we’re getting to start at a high level. Our goal is simply to maintain the quality and the creativity, while growing local awareness of these excellent wines. What better way for us to become a part of the community here in the Comox Valley, and the Vancouver Island area, than to offer world-class wines at affordable prices to our new friends and neighbours?”

Vineyard & Winery – Manager:

With a view to farm using sustainable, low-impact methods, the Cameron family has hired Mark Timmermans as the Vineyard and Winery manager.

Mark, his wife Freya, and their kids, Narah (16), Levi (14) and Skylar (9), have lived the last dozen years in the Cowichan Valley. Mark spent much of that time as executive director at Providence Farm, a 400-acre organic community farm that is a hub for people and a cornerstone of the Duncan community.

Drawing on more than 25 years of farming experience in a variety of settings – from growing roses in wine country, to organic market gardening on Saltspring Island, Vancouver Island and the Berry Islands – Mark and Freya have enough experience to know they have a lot to learn.

Practices & Techniques

The Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery has an approved Environmental Farm Plan which documents beneficial environmental management practices employed to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the land.

Here is a sampling of the many practices we currently employ:

-Drip irrigation and use of drought-tolerant decorative plants to minimize water use.
-Minimize trips into the vineyard (save on fuel, minimize ground compaction).
-Recycle & compost programme for household, winery and vineyard waste
-Minimize spraying for powdery mildew. Due to our choice of varietals, >65% of the vineyard should require no, or very little, spraying. Also use of a high trellis technique and wide row and plant spacing, improved air flow and sun exposure will likely result in less need for spraying on the remaining 35% of the vineyard.
-Wildlife fencing & netting (deer, rabbit, racoon, sheep, and birds) to minimize conflict and crop loss
-Wildlife corridors are maintained – natural walking corridors kept open and allow ease of movement for all wildlife.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Our grapes were chosen for our cooler climate and condensed growing season, and are proven winners on Vancouver Island and the Pacific Northwest. These include Marechal Foch, Leon Millot, Cabernet-Foch, Ortega (Riesling-like), and Siegerrebe (Gewürztraminer-like), Pinot Gris, and Schönburger.
