Barton Estate is a family owned producer of premium cool climate Canberra District wines from estate grown fruit. Our grape varieties were chosen to take advantage of this unique environment of the Canberra cool climate wine producing region. Our passion is to bring together the science of viticulture and winemaking with the art and mystique which surrounds a truly great wine. Our super premium wines include Petit verdot, Shiraz, Sangiovese, a Cabernet blend comprising all five of the great grape varieties of Bordeaux, trophy winning Riesling and Sauvignon blanc Semillon.

Our 20 acre vineyard was established in 1997.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The 220 acre property on which the 20 acre Barton Estate vineyard is now situated was formerly part of the historic Jeir Station. The property is also home to the 16 stand, 100 year old Jeir woolshed, one of the largest and oldest in the Southern Tablelands. Barton Estate has extensive areas of remnant yellow box and Blakely’s red gum woodland populated by many species of native bird, including the rare Superb Parrot.

The vineyard site was carefully chosen and is widely regarded as some of the best viticultural land in the district; red soils with a north / north east aspect on sunny slopes where frost risk is minimal. In 1997 we began transforming pasture into vines by establishing a nursery to produce our own rooted cuttings sourced from the region’s top producers.

Our background in the scientific field of Plant Biology led us to experiment with some unusual grape varieties. The vineyard has been described by James Halliday as a “Joseph’s coat”, comprised of the white varieties Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and a small amount of Viognier
