Will completed his winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University in 2005 and has since worked with De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley, Draytons Family Wines in the Hunter Valley and Canoblas-Smith in Orange along with vintages in Bordeaux, France.

Will has a love of cool climate, handcrafted wines made in small batches with a non-interventionist approach. Taking an artisan view to wine making, Will believes in old world techniques (hand plunging, wild ferments, whole bunch pressing) combined with a strong chemical and microbiological background.

The Bantry Grove property was purchased in the 1930′s by Terrey Johnson’s father. Located on the rim of the Bathurst Valley to the very South of the Orange Region, the land features rich volcanic soils and an elevation of 960 metres. The property was the Johnson family’s sheep and cattle farm until the 1990s when the first vines were planted covering 12.2 hectares.

The vineyard is carefully nurtured to promote its unique natural bio-diversity, all grapes are hand picked during vintage and a minimal interventionist approach is taken throughout the growing period.

Bantry Grove have been producing contracted grapes to leading wineries throughout Orange and the Hunter Valley for many years.

In 2004, Terrey Johnson decided to create the Bantry Grove wine brand and began to use his grapes to make his own range of cool climate wines. The distinct terroir and elevation of the Bantry Grove vineyard produce savoury soft reds and full flavoured aromatic whites.

The Team

Terrey Johnson – grape grower:

Terrey Johnson has a passion for rural farming, good food and elegant wine. Back in the early 1990′s, Terrey decided to diversify the family sheep and cattle farm by planting grape vines. This has been a significant labour of love which is paying off as the Bantry Grove range of wines moves from strength to strength. Terrey Johnson pursues a philosophy based on diversity, balance and quality on the vineyard.

Barbie Johnson – sales:

Barbie Johnson works at farmers markets all over NSW, promoting the Bantry Grove range and the Orange region as a whole. Barbie’s good humour and devotion to the family wine brand shines through.

Jen Johnson – office & cellar door manager:

Jen Johnson ensures everything runs like clockwork within the office and cellar door.

Tim Esson – consultant viticulturalist:

Tim Esson’s cool climate expertise is directly transferred from his education and experience in the cool climate wine growing region of Marlborough, New Zealand. His experience as a viticulturalist in Australia includes vineyards in the Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley and the Orange Region.

Tim Esson has been giving Terrey Johnson expert advice for more than 10 years and worked alongside him since the first Bantry Grove branded vintage in 2004.

Pamela Harrison – consultant marketing:

Pamela handles our marketing and events on a part time consulting basis. She has a wealth of experience in the wine industry both here in Orange and across Australia. Bringing knowledge of the wine wholesale, retail and consumer marketing sectors to Bantry Grove.

Practices & Techniques

Bantry Grove takes an holistic approach to wine making, carefully managing the vineyard to ensure the resulting quality and flavour of the grapes are at their very best.

Self-confessed perfectionist, winemaker Will Rickard-Bell, then has the enviable task of bringing out the complexity of what he regards as the best parcels of fruit from the Bantry Grove vineyard. Using artisan, old world techniques Will accentuates all the great flavours, colours and textures within the grapes. The end result is a range of hand crafted and elegant wines that are true to their cool climate origins and the distinct terroir of the Bantry Grove vineyard.
