B Wise Vineyard Winery

We benefit from the centuries of tradition that our winemakers bring forward in their art of winemaking. Handcrafted in barrels, our underground facilities naturally provide the right conditions for aging wine. Consistently cool temperature, continually high humidity and low levels of light. Our tasting room offers you the unique opportunity to honor the passion of wine’s culture and aesthetic properties.

Mark Herold has recently joined B Wise for the intended purpose of creating and expanding our Brion label. Mark’s fascination with wine started in his childhood home in Panama City. A fascination which eventually landed him a Ph.D in Ecology at the University of California at Davis with an emphasis in nutritional biochemistry. His first foray into the wine world was at Joseph Phelps Vineyards as the Research Enologist. Here Mark was able to bridge the scientific method with winemaking to determine the best approach to making the best expression of wine quality and seamless oak integration. In 1998 Mark started Merus. His first vintage was extremely challenging weather wise but the 1998 Merus received 93 points from Robert Parker. Mark started consulting soon after with a client list that has included Hestan, Kamen, Harris, Buccella, Kobalt, Celani Family Vineyards, Maze and The Vineyardist.

Massimo Monticelli is a fourth generation winemaker. His father, grandfather, and great grandfather were all Tuscan winemakers. He learned from his father, Marcello and grandfather, Lito at a young age. After graduate school from UC Davis he worked for 5 years at Silver Oak and currently is a consultant to several small family wineries. Massimo brings both a passion for the grape, and a hands-on knowledge producing some of the most in-demand Cabernet made in the Valley by bringing both classic sensibility and an artisan feel to our wines.

I grew up on a farm in Washington state. That’s where I learned about growing fruit. I loved it, but Dad told me there was no money in farming and that I should consider becoming a chemical engineer. So I did. And then I started an oil company and traveled the globe. The world’s greatest restaurants and wineries became my classroom for learning about the most interesting and alluring fruit of all – the wine grape. The more I learned the more certain I became that I needed my own vineyards. And so the search began. I visited all the greatest wine growing regions, here and abroad, and could have bought land anywhere. But it
was this mountainside in Sonoma that captured my heart. It’s here, in these vineyards that I can engage in the process, gain knowledge and pursue perfection. For me, learning what it takes to make great wine, is the path to true wisdom.
