Winemaker

Ian Burch:
Ian brings an incredible dedication, energy and passion to his role as winemaker at Archery Summit. After working harvests across Sonoma County, Barossa Valley, New Zealand and South Africa, Ian discovered his love of small production, hand-crafted cool climate varietals during a trip to Burgundy. Ian brought this newfound passion to the Willamette Valley, where he settled in 2008 to hone his crafting of site-specific Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Previous experience at Evening Land Vineyards, where he worked under the tutelage of legendary Burgundian winemaker Dominique Lafon, and Scott Paul Wines, where he helped establish their award-winning wine program, allowed Ian to grow and evolve his winemaking skills and philosophy.

History

Established by Gary Andrus in 1993, a pioneer among winemakers who championed site-specific wines and stressed the importance of clonal selections, Archery Summit has earned an international reputation for producing some of the finest New World Pinot Noir.

The Team

Tim Scott | Vineyard Manager:
Oregon native with more than 30 years of experience growing Pinot Noir in Willamette Valley, Tim began his career in Oregon’s then-fledgling wine industry in the 1980’s. Hired to plant the vines at Rex Hill Vineyards, Tim went on to manage the estate for 14 years, learning hands on through trial and error the behavior and intricacies of Willamette Valley. In 1999, Tim took a position at Domaine Drouhin as Site Manager. Having demonstrated an unmatched ability to consistently produce quality fruit, Drouhin sought his expertise as the estate assembled its own team. After 15 years of nurturing their vines, Tim was eager for a new challenge. Able to be selective at this point in his career, he came to Archery Summit. According to Tim, “It’s all about baby steps in making the fruit a little better. Little changes amongst the vines, can have a huge impact in the bottle.”

Practices & Techniques

Inspired by the remarkable growing conditions provided by the Willamette Valley, our team has unmatched expertise and in-depth knowledge of the land, right down to the intricacies of each vineyard block and how it will perform in relation to the season. Alongside Winemaker Chris Mazepink, Assistant Winemaker Eleni Papadakis is another established Dundee Hills Pinot Noir veteran with a reputation for producing award-winning wines at properties such as Domaine Serene. As a team, they approach each step of the winemaking process with thoughtfulness and care. When it comes to Pinot Noir, it’s impossible to separate the process of growing the grapes from that of crafting the wine. Because the team has an intimate understanding of our vineyards, they’re able to adjust their methods to meet the whims of each vintage.

Archery Summit pioneered the gravity-flow system of winemaking, eliminating the need for mechanical pumps used to transport must and wine among fermentors, tanks and barrels. Our design utilizes five levels: grapes received at the crush pad on the top level travel downward, one floor at a time, to our fermentation hall, aging caves and bottling area. By using an elevator built into the cellar 60 feet below ground, barrels can be lifted for racking and blending and filled without the use of pumps. This process prevents any stress on the wine that might impair its essence. Likewise, the winemaking team employs special fermentation techniques and varies barrel regimen to precisely match the cooper and toast level with the specific vineyard blocks and vintage conditions. These extra efforts are what allow us to craft wines that vividly express their distinct places of origin.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Pinot Noir, a delicate and temperamental grape, requires very specific site attributes. The topography and climate of Willamette Valley offers ideal growing conditions for the varietal, and more specifically, our winery location in Dundee Hills was chosen because we felt it presented the best combination of soil, slope and climate. Archery Summit implements organic farming practices, including a biodynamic approach at the Renegade Ridge Estate vineyard. Vines are densely planted to produce smaller berries and yields are kept extremely low. Because each of our six vineyards is different, we adapt our vineyard practices to suit each individual site. Additionally, our vineyards are planted to a wide selection of clones to produce a broad range of flavors from which to blend, and rootstock-to-clone combinations are continuously undergoing trials to best match plants to specific site requirements in order to create the most complex wines possible.
