Winemaker

Rudy Zuidema
Winemaker & Vineyard Manager

With more than 25 years of winemaking experience, specializing in organic farming and hillside vineyard management. Rudy believes that creating elite wine comes from stringent viticulture and winemaking with intimate attention to detail.

His specialty is Cabernet Sauvignon, perfect for this mountain estate property that contains 100% Cabernet vines. Rudy began his career in Australia’s McLaren Vale before working exclusively in Napa with such respected wineries as Cuvaison, Honig and Robert Craig prior to his post as winemaker and Vineyard Manager for Ehlers Estate. He is now focused on directing small estate vineyards and making wines starting only from the roots and soils.

Believing that the Mount George site has the potential for world-class Cabernets, Rudy is converting the property to an Organic and Biodynamic ranch which will bring out the intense, powerful, yet natural terroir these practices produce.

The Team

Ewan & Cyndi Downie
Founders

Alyris is the result of a dream born from a first trip to Napa Valley several years ago. Wine lovers themselves, Ewan and Cyndi Downie had a vision of living in God’s country and perhaps producing wines that would be adored by wine-lovers worldwide.

The first step in realizing this dream came in securing a picturesque and established 25 year old vineyard. The site will produce a range of high quality, small batch wines that showcase the terroir of the southern Napa region. The small size of the vineyard allows for attention to detail in every barrel. Combined with the influence of a skilled, patient craftsman, Alyris Vineryards’ goal is to create iconic wines that will be some of the most sought after from all of Napa.

Practices & Techniques

The Audition Cabernet Sauvignon is produced using 100% estate grapes, which are cave-aged and bottled on-site. The inaugural 2013 release features wine that is dark ruby and purple with very long, fine tannins. The berries grown at the Alyris mountain-side vineyard are compact in size with firm flavors that meld beautifully with 50-70% new rich French oak.

Beginning with the 2014 release, our wines will draw upon the unique Alyris Vineyard site, whereby three distinct blocks (Take I, II & III; each differing in aspect, slope, soil profile and microclimate) are harvested, fermented and aged separately, to create a “Take” wine with the personality of Mount George, but the pedigree of Napa Valley.

The most desirable barrels from each vintage will be reserved for our flagship “Carnal Cab”.

The Audition Chardonnay is produced from premium grapes sourced from the cooler Carneros district in Napa Valley.

Our ultimate expression of the Alyris Vineyard site is the Carnal Cab, a seductive offering that identifies the finest of the Audition Series barrels and blends them into a wine that is truly a revelation. Once released (expected to be in 2017), the Carnal Cab will be available through our sister label, Carnal Wine Co.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Located at an elevation of 1,100 feet above sea level on the northwest-facing slope of Mount George, immediately east of Napa, California.

This hillside aspect of the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard benefits from both cool nights of marine influenced fog and direct sun exposure in the afternoons. The resulting wines are balanced with rich long tannins, powerful fruit, and a long aging acid profile.

The site of the Alyris Vineyard and Winery is the key to producing world-class wines. The coarse, rocky and well-drained soils that overlie rocks of volcanic origin force the vines to dig deep for their survival, resulting in a fruit that is intense and concentrated. The finished wines are elegantly balanced and will have the strength, power and grace to shine amongst the finest wines that Napa Valley can produce.

Our vineyard employs 100% organic farming techniques, is fed by natural spring water, and offers breathtaking views of the valley floor. All wines produced are cave-aged, and bottled on-site.
