History
Five years later, they decided to expand into the emerging varieties that were gaining popularity with many of America’s wine consumers. The result was a new winery, named anonymously, Arthur Earl. Arthur Earl quickly began to limit its production to varieties native to the Rhone valley of France and northern Italy. Arthur Earl is now well into its second decade and is still producing small lots of wine, usually between 100 and 300 hundred cases per release. Recently, wines in the style of northern Spain have been added.
While many small wineries specialize in just a few varieties, producing them in significant quantities, the Arthur Earl philosophy lends itself to producing small lots of different varieties and blends. At any given time, we will have as many as 15 different wines to sample and purchase in our tasting room.
The wines come from such white varieties as Malvasia Bianca and Viognier, and red varieties such as Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Lagrein, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. There are also several blends typical of the southern Rhone valley, Italy’s Piemonte and Spain’s Rioja. As you may have guessed, our emphasis is on red wines.
Arthur Earl’s wines are produced by us in our own facility in nearby Buellton. In 1996 we acquired a large warehouse and configured it as a winery. Since the 1997 harvest all Arthur Earl wines have been produced in that location.
