In the state of Michigan, there are 5 different wine trails, each of which is unique in their own special way. They are all worth a visit if you feel like heading to that part of the country for a little bit of wine tasting, but there may be one of the 5 that is considered more scenic than the rest. Head to the Southwest part of the state and you will come upon the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, so named because it runs along I-196, right along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. It goes without saying that the scenery is as stunning as the wines you will taste when you take that trip.

This Southwest Michigan wine trail basically gets started in Holland, and stretches all the way down to just north of Michigan City along I-196. There is a section of the trail that branches off along I-94 towards Kalamazoo, with 4 wineries and tasting rooms located along that particular stretch. All told, there are roughly 20 different wineries that you can visit in this part of the state, making it a region you may want to spend a few days in if you want to take them all in.

The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail can be a lot of different things to different people: it is home to quality wineries that wine aficionados will love, and it also has the scenery and settings that make it a perfect place for a romantic getaway. Since this part of the state is a popular tourist destination, there are plenty of things to see and do outside of visiting wineries and tasting rooms, not to mention plenty of places to stay along the trail. This is definitely a region that almost demands that you stay a while.

Beside the beauty and scenery of this trail, there is another reason that wine lovers should visit, and that is because there is always something going on at one of the wineries in the region. Much like the wines that are available there, you can find something going on to suit every single taste. Some wineries will feature food and wine pairings, while others will offer up craft nights or live music on the weekend. It’s easy to get hold of a calendar of events so that you can plan your trip accordingly in order to be able to cram in as much fun as possible.

California may get most of the love when it comes to wine regions in the US, but we strongly suggest that you take your wine explorations out east to the state of Michigan. There are several award-winning wineries doing great work there, and they are all willing to open their doors to give you a little insight into what they are doing there. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the Southwest part of the state is home to some of the most stunning landscapes you will ever see. Great location, great wine…what’s not to love?
