American Syrah, or Shiraz, comes from California and Washington State. Much like those in France, a Syrah will vary based on the climate where it is grown. American Syrah’s don’t get the attention they may deserve because of the popularity for Australian Syrah’s. They are cheaper and is, coincidently enough, affected by the Australian spelling, Shiraz. The tastes are very different; people like it, but no one buys more of it. Zinfandel has been the dominant red wine from the United States, starting in the 1830s in California, and still produces the majority of a kind in the country. It wasn’t until the 1960s that winemaker Paul Draper reintroduced the Zinfandel as a classic wine by producing in its original style, not as a jug wine. Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are the most common red wines to be produced and considered amongst the finest type of wine in the world. In the United States, Oregon, and Michigan have growing regions of these wines besides California. They are romantic red wines with a specific taste that stands out amongst other red wines. Cabernet, however, has great aging potential A 2013 Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir is bright and infused with plenty of red fruit to taste on one’s palate, while a 2013 Caymus Cabernet Special indulges on the dark red side.


So France, Spain, Australia, and Argentina among others are not the only countries to get great tasting red wines.
