The power of alcohol altering one’s consciousness and relieving oneself of reality has been considered divine for thousands of years. Greeks may have their God of Wine, but the wine makers at Ravenswood Winery sure give him strict competition. On an autumn day in 1976, as ravens screeched from tree branches above, Joel Peterson worked relentlessly to bring in four tons of grapes before a looming thunderstorm hit. The fruit he crushed that night was used for one of two single-vineyard Sonoma County Zins – the first wines to bear Ravenswood’s signature ring of ravens. The insignia consists of three ravens with locked claws that represent the brotherhood and dedication of all the farmers and wine makers to deliver quality product to their customers.

Over the coming years, Joel Peterson developed contracts with many grape farmers throughout the Sonoma County. The Dry Creek region is popular for its excellent grapes and Joel capitalized on its potential. By 1991, thanks to the accomplishments of the Vintners Blend wines, Ravenswood relocated to its very own little piece of heaven on the outskirts of Sonoma. In the modern wine making industry, all wine-houses strive to make wines that mimic the latest darling that’s captured wine critics’ fancy, Ravenswood Winery stands by its love of old-vine selections and its confidence in traditional Old-World winemaking.

Their premium wines are fermented in little wooden tanks using wild, natural yeasts and pressed down by hand three to five times per day. The wines stand out by intense, spicy aromas supported by rich, berry flavors and long, clean finishes. The winery produces many kinds of wines but the Bed Rock Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma are especially popular.

The winery is especially popular amongst connoisseurs and wine enthusiasts of America, but the retail and online availability makes the access to their quality product even easier.   The staff is really polite and special care is taken to the needs of the customer. Wine tastings are conducted very frequently and presided occasionally by the owners themselves, helping customers to pick out the best premium wines.

The “ICON RED BLEND SONOMA COUNTY” is especially popular amongst enthusiasts and is one of the signature Ravenswood wines. It has alluring blackberry, mulberry and blueberry touch with just a hint of anise and spices. It has 27% Carignane, 24% Petite Sirah, 23% Zinfandel, 21% Alicante Bouschet and 5% Garnacha. Ravenswood’s ICON is a revitalization of old-style natural Sonoma Mixed Blacks blend fashioned from old, low-production vineyards planted before Prohibition, and is indeed in  honor to Sonoma County’s unbelievable ancient vines.

Another great wine Ravenswood offers its delightful customers is the 2013 Ravenswood Estate Merlot Sonoma. Rich and ripe, with bright black fruit flavors of cherry and plum, it is indeed one of the best Merlots Sonoma Valley wine brewers could offer. With a hint of warm herbs and plushy texture, it has a signature spicy after taste. If you want to experience what a non-wimpy Merlot tastes like, this is one of the best wines around. Extra care is taken during the brewing of this special merlot. It gets nicely ripe in the warm environment of Sonoma Valley, and this 100% pure. Special car is taken to give about 12-18 days of extended maceration on the skins to extract maximum color and flavor.  The end product is divine. A spicy merlot with dark fruity flavor of cherry and plum, that tantalizes your taste buds and deeply satisfies the palette.
