When a wine says ‘contains sulfites’, we all hesitate a bit. Does that mean wine contains chemicals? Is that the reason why wine always gives a headache? Probably yes, but have you ever tried low sulfite wine?

 

Before you come to any further conclusion, these sulfites occur naturally in every bottle of wine. Let’sbriefly discuss what these sulfites are. They are sulfur dioxide. It is a byproduct of fermentation and whether you like it or not, all wines have it. Sulfurhas been in the wine recipes since a long time. It makes surethe wine stays stable and the oxygen inside it is maintained. It also prevents the wine from fermenting when being shipped.

 

If you actually have tried a low sulfite wine, you would really feel the difference in the taste. Surprisingly,the juice feels alive. It is interesting that the last glass of the wine will taste different than the first. Why? Because once the wine is opened and it sits out for a while, it changes. Instead of assisting the same, the wine tastes exotic.

 

Sulfites and Headaches



Don’t worry if you see sulfur in your wine. It surely does not make you sick. According to science, there is no real connection between sulfites and headaches. It is actually the flavor, additivities and high alcohol content that leads to a headache. But hey, don’t worry. There is a quick fix trick to that too. Simplydrinkwater along with your wine and wave those headaches goodbye.

 

Journal of Headache &Pain conducted a study on Alcohol in 2008said that sulfites have not been a cause of headaches even in people who have the asthmatic sulfite trouble. The study also revealed that there are plenty of foods like dried fruits, juice fruits, pickles, raisins, chips and soy sauce that contain sulfites and their quantity is 10 times greater than what’s present in wine.

 

Farmed grapes are usually vinified with less sulfur. That’s because the vineyards that are healthier don’t need much of sulfur. Most of the certified organic wines in Europe allow adding up to 100 ppm sulfur in red wine and up to 150 ppm in white and rose wine.

 

Is there is a difference in the taste of a wine with sulfur and low suffer? Well, not really. However, in the beginning,there might be a funky smell which is created bythe yeast and bacteria but it will too disappear after 5 minutes of opening the bottle.

Is organic wine also low sulfite wine?


Not really. Almost all organic wines contain sulfites but the quantity is always little. The truth is, there are very few wines that are made without Sulfites. That’s because wine is a perishable product and it is prone to oxidation. Sulfites are necessary to keep the wine fresh. The low sulfite wines hence have a shorter life.

 

That does not mean low sulfite wines don’t taste good. They are delicious, and they are great value for money.
