Wisconsin Vineyards reach back to the mid-19th century when the first grapes were planted overlooking the Wisconsin River. The fertile soil made it easier to plant fruit, but the harsh Wisconsin winters made harvesting a bit difficult. However, the process was simplified when winemakers discovered that a blend of European and Native American fruit was the best combination for the moody climate.
It wasn’t until 1994 that Wisconsin wineries were made a part of the American Viticultural Areas (AVA), and since then the wine industry has exploded in the state.

Since 1994 a lot has happened to the Wisconsin wine industry. For starters, the sheer number of wineries in Wisconsin has reached into the hundreds producing incredible amounts of wine every year. Also, in 2011 the state made some serious progress by holding the first ever wine competition at the state fair. This helped generate buzz about the unique taste and distinct flavor of Wisconsin wines.
