Winery in Maryland

“Wine is a constant proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”, said Benjamin Franklin.  Visiting any winery in Maryland is sure to make you feel this way! The Maryland wine country is home to more than 400 wines and as any winery in Maryland worth its salt (or grapes!) will tell you, you are sure to taste at least one wine that you have never tasted before anywhere in the world!

Any winery in Maryland can offer you a bouquet of experiences that are sure to warm your soul-whether you are travelling alone, with an entourage of family and friends or just with your sweetheart. Whether you go to a winery in Maryland that is in the Chesapeake plains or in the mountains of Western Maryland, the wines you taste will be world class.

The first winery in Maryland opened its doors in 1945. Since then, planted vineyards have come to cover nearly 250 acres. Viticulture as an industry started in the 16th century and the first grapes from Europe were planted on 200 acres on the banks of the St. Mary’s River. Today, Maryland vineyards grow hundreds of varieties of grapes, from Arneis, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Blanc to Zinfandel, Sauvignon blanc, Tinta Barroca and Roussanne (among many others).

With four wine growing regions, there is a wide variety and depth in the types of wines produced. The Piedmont Plateau has seen the varieties of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The Western Mountain region is home to such varieties as Vidal, Petit Verdot, and Chambourcin. The Eastern Shore is blessed by being near the Chesapeake Bay and the area is divided into the Upper Shore, Mid Shore and Lower Shore, with a diverse array of grapes growing in each region. Southern Maryland has hotter climates so the grapes that are grown here are the Mediterranean and Southern Italian varieties such as Sangiovese, Vidal, Montepulciano, and Blaufrankisch.

The Maryland Wine Festival is a major event in the enotourism calendar. It happens during the third weekend every September and started in 1984. There are over 25,000 wine enthusiasts who visit every year to taste the nearly 200 varieties of wines that are laid out for their taste buds to revel in!

In any winery in Maryland, you can get a taste of dry or sweet, red or white wines. There are wines that are blends. They are made with a combination of grape and the local fruits of Maryland. So, for example, you could taste a wine that has undertones of cranberries and spicy plums along with Syrah grapes.

Wineries in Maryland offer an array of interesting activities all-round the year that go very well with a glass of wine. For example, there are wine tastings along with food and music. There are those that offer you wood-fired pizzas and artisan cheeses. There are those that give you the fun opportunity to paint your own custom-made glasses for taking back home to savor your wines!

Whether you have been a wine enthusiast for years or are just newly indoctrinated into the world of wines, any winery in Maryland will offer you an experience that you won’t forget anytime soon!
