In order to take a trip through wine country, you usually have to get out into the country and onto roads less traveled. For many, that is all part of the allure of wine tasting, but there is a growing group of wine lovers that like to take an urban approach to tasting their favorite wines. One part of the country that is actively embracing that group can be found in Portland, Oregon. There are a number of great regions to be found all across the state, but if you want to stay in the city and get some great tasting done, you need to take a look at the wineries in Portland.
A fairly new group known as PDX Urban Wineries is made up of winemakers who use grapes from all over the Pacific Northwest to create delicious wines right in the heart of Portland. It’s certainly a novel approach to wine tasting, and one that is being solidly embraced by the residents of the city, as well as those that travel in to get a little sample of Portland wine tasting. While most tours require you to choose a designated driver or limit the amount of wines that you taste, taking a trip though the wineries and tasting rooms of Portland can be done by bus, cab, or even on foot.
The great part about visiting wineries in Portland is that you get to sample the grapes that are grown all over the region. Knowing where those grapes come from can help you plan future win trips to the likes of Willamette Valley and Columbia Gorge, as well as a host of other appellations that offer a wide selection of varietals other than just the Pinot Noir that the region has become somewhat recognized for over the years.
As this urban approach to wine tasting grows, so do the number of events and tasting experiences available to visitors. Portland has long been a city known for its drinking and dining experiences, so the addition of Portland wineries makes for an exciting new approach to both. The number of wineries operating in the city is still small enough to make a self-guided tour pretty straightforward, but like with most other great wine regions, it is often the guided tours that allow you to get the most out of what is on offer. A little inside knowledge can go a long way when it comes to sampling wines.
Wine tasting in the city also means never really having to worry about finding a great place to stay during your visit. It also means that you can take advantage of all the other great tourist attractions on offer in Portland, just in case you feel like having a day away from wine tasting, although we aren’t really sure why that would happen. If you have visited a number of different wine trails across the country and are currently looking or something a little different, we suggest going the urban route by visiting the wineries in Portland.
